Brake Disc Dust Cover

My daughter's 2010 1.6 petrol has a very corroded off side front dust cover in fact is is almost non existent, the other three are all fine as I have had a look, and has been advised to have it replaced. Has anyone had any experience of renewing such a thing and if so is it something that I can do for rather than a garage.

I am aware that you have to remove the brake caliper, caliper mounting bracket and then the disc to expose the duat cover which I have done on other cars to replace discs and pads.

Any help or advice would be welcomed.

Kind Regards

Hi,

to replace this thing you will need to dismantle the hub bearing of the knuckle. It’s a big and heavy job on old cars especially if there is rust on the parts , they could be literally welded together. I will suggest just leave it as is until new bearing is needed. My ones are at bad state too, couldn’t replace two years ago when replacing the bearings and it will be replaced at the next bearing change.

At least yours still looks vaguely solid - I seem to remember the one on my old Mk1 D4D being disturbingly see-thru in places

At least it looks like you were able to get the bearing apart. I many cases you need to press the bearings out and back in again (a bench press in on my wish list!) It looks like Toyota has been extra mean by putting the dust shield between the bearing housing and the main carrier. That would negate the usual workaround where you simply cut an opening in the shield (see pic). That's just mean Mr Toyota!

So, @colabora962 I'd concur, leave the shields alone until you need to do the bearings. You could buy the shields now so you have them ready. On the other hand, if you drive the car frequently you could argue the shields will make little difference whether they are there or not. The ones on the Auris don't look like they have huge air scoops or anything so they are just there to give some modest protection against dirt. I don't think the MOT cares about them(?) either.

The bearing from my picture is broken in half from fight with it to get it out. Was a real pain, hours of hammering , spraying, and heating. At the end job done , but if you ask me to do this again only for the shields, no way I will. image.thumb.jpeg.2d6386ab8af9f742eb41a369fd604229.jpeg and

Here recently one peace broke and caused some scary noises one night but quickly found it me too day. Lesson learned, when changing rusty bearings just buy and have the things ready and change them too. image.thumb.jpeg.ca87118447303c50f5fa56418b25e5a9.jpeg

The bearing always need to be split when replaced. This is why you need pullers to get the centre hub off and then use a hydraulic press to get the two inner races off and the outer race. Then you need to reverse the whole process again to press all the new parts back on.

But, looking at your pictures, from what I understand, you just replace the whole centre hub with the bearing inside. So you don't actually ever need to remove the bearing itself. This makes sense, as it is a slow (and somewhat dangerous if not done correct) process to press all bearing components off and back on.

The car care nut Toyota guru was very relaxed about leaving rotten ones alone, they don't have a critical function. Being OCD I've stripped bearings out to do it but it's a right pain

Yes a little paint hear can save you a fortune but that time has passed for this car anyway.

I can confirm on these cars all 4 wheels has hub bearing assembly, when change you need to change the whole thing. It’s usually easier that way, but again if you have rust then things change significantly. Here if anyone need. https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/234644159724?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=yi1ojZncSxy&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=p34UK1z2T4m&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY
I bought blueprint at the time and after 90000 miles they are still fine. Only one of the rear gone bad, the sensor and I had replaced with skf. The other rear makes some strange cracking noises when rotating the wheel off the ground but no any movement or whining so far , therefore keeping it.
