RAV4 2004 1CD-FTV Engine Swap From Avensis

Heya everyone!

I am sorry if this was already asked before.

I have a Toyota Rav4 2004 with the D4D 1CD-FTV engine, the one with a square (radiator / intercooler grill?) on top of it. My oil suction tube / strainer thing clogged which led to the engine being killed partially. It runs but a clacking sound can be heard, especially while accelerating. I think it spun a rod bearing.

I am looking to replace the engine, but where I live, most of second hand engines are 1CD-FTV from Avensis or Corolla or such cars. Would that engine fit Rav4 2004? The Avensis one seems to have a plastic cover on top while mine has the intercooler / radiator / whatever that grill is on top of it.

My engine looks like this one: https://postimg.cc/9wYn4sZR

The engines I find look like this one: https://postimg.cc/2L1xYJTN and https://postimg.cc/sBKPhyNR

The rest of components (alternator, and the rest) are ok so if they are compatible, I could, in theory swap them from the broken Rav4 one to the Avensis one as long as the Avensis engine fits the mounts / transmission, etc.

Anybody did such swap before or has knowledge?

Engine is NON-UK. Standard European model with steering wheel on the left side.

Thanks a lot!

George

I've not done this swap, but I see no reason why it shouldn't work.

The RAV4 has the intercooler on top of the engine, while Avensis and Corolla has the intercooler down in front, in the bumper. The engine itself should be identical and fit on to your gearbox and all other ancillaries. As long as your existing intercooler is OK, then it's just a matter of moving that over to the replacement engine.

@APS does the Avensis engine have the necessary mount points / screw holes / whatever to hold the intercooler on top of it if it's not designed to have one in Avensis?

Apparently the ancillaries are almost all different on the RAV4 compared to Corolla/Avensis. Some claim the heads are slightly different too. The main cylinder block is the same, so I guess it is just a matter of how many things needs to be transplanted from the old engine to the new.  You are not the first to come across this question:

I am sure the turbo, etc, all work fine so if I can swap them from one engine to another it should be ok as long as the fittings are the same.

Yes, it won't be a completely straight swap, but you should be able to make it work with the parts from the two engines (assuming the head didn't get too damaged by the lack of oil. Out of curiosity, any idea as to why the strainer got blocked in the first place?
