yaris hybrid

Hi,

Within the next few months or so I'm hoping to buy a yaris, but I can't decide wether or not to get a hybrid.

Are there any known common problems with the hybrid version that I should be aware of? Also I've only seen them as automatic, is it available as manual or just automatic?

Thanks

Hybrid only as auto.

I have a MK3 hybrid for over 4 years with zero fault. It's very reliable being a Toyota. I have ordered a new MK4 next year which is a lot better than the MK3.

What sort of year you are looking to buy the car? Would I recommend a hybrid? Yes.

I'm thinking around 2017 - 2020 possibly

I would certainly go for the hybrid, the hybrid technology along with the cvt gearbox is super. Plus especially in the Yaris the mpg is great 👍

The Toyota hybrid is one of the best on the market, look after the car, and it will look after your wallet, oil changes with decent oil is a must, it's not un usual to get 3-400k miles + from the 1.5 hybrid

you will notice a drop in mpg over the colder months i get mid to high 50's in the winter up to 70+ in the summer

only common issue with the hybrid is failing 12v Battery if not regularly used, lock down killed/weakened many a Battery - these are an AGM type, they are made by Yuasa for Toyota replacement is around £120-£150 - saying that i replaced one for a friend on their 2012 yaris on it original 12v Battery so ten years old

hybrid is a very different driving style, it takes a while to get used too, the yaris is best around town and in the urban environment, with the occasional faster road/motorway trip

edit. Toyota call it an eCvt gearbox, but it doesn't use a belt like a standard CVT it's fully gear driven

The only problem with the early hybrids is when accelerating hard you will get the engine noise in the video which puts a lot of people off, i know owners will say you learn how to drive so it doesn't make that racket but there will be lots of situations where you have no choice.

This is much better on the mk4 versions

I do a lot of social trips across the country annually & Wales sometimes, don't like the noise from day one from the MK3 on rapid acceleration. In urban town it's fine.

So will be looking forward to getting the MK4.

For the OP - iirc pre April 2017 is zero tax. If you got the finance for the MK4, then go for that as its a much better car, but used are almost or same price as new.

Most manufacturers' hybrids basically use electric bits bolted on to a 'normal' engine and transmission. The Toyota system is built from scratch as a hybrid and is a very different system. I don't think they could even make it pretend to be a manual. As said above they call it e-CVT because it behaves like a CVT, but isn't one.

When you are looking keep in mind that, iirc from when we got our 2018, there are non-hybrid Yaris with the mechanical CVT out there as well. Some adverts don't make it very obvious which they are, so read carefully.

The new one cheats a bit - The previous gen HSDs would pretty much redline if you floored it, and hold that RPM, which just became an annoying drone. The new one jumps up to high RPM but doesn't redline right away, instead slowly builds up to redline proportionally as the speed increases, so you still get that rising RPM impression which is much nicer on the ears and gives audible feedback of progress and beans. :naughty:

The 3-pot is a lot more growly than the 4-pot in the previous HSDs, which may or may not be a good thing.

The other trick is it will also switch to Otto-cycle mode, which gives it a massive torque boost compared to the atkinson-only ICE in the previous gen (But this also makes it gulp down petrol disturbingly quickly if sustained!  )

The acceleration characteristics of the Mk4 are really nice and are my biggest obstacle when trying to hit 80+mpg because I just can't help giving it the beans when I get clear of traffic... :whistling1:

(Seriously I was stuck in so much traffic it took me 2 hours to do a 45 minute journey today! :crybaby: Ahh London roads, you all suck!)

My previous car was a Volvo XC60 which had the 8 speed geartronic auto transmission which was superb.

At first I was a bit concerned that my RAV4 hybrid's transmission was not for me ☹️

But 18 months on I love it, it's so relaxing to drive and if you need instant power, eg at a busy roundabout it's there 👍

Brilliant car to drive mechanically, but what let's it down is the build quality and road noise ☹️

But as far as the eCvt transmission goes, brilliant 👍

As it is obvious already, if you are about an automatic, hybrid is the best . If you about a manual, there are still some examples up to early 2020 mk3 with manuals transmission and then after with mk4 only hybrids are available. Either of these will be a good car.

They do sell manual Mk4's but not in the UK, although Toyota said they were considering bring it in as a more affordable base-spec model in the future. Seems unlikely given how well the hybrid is selling and how much trouble they're having meeting demand with the single model they do have, but who knows what the future holds?

Right now the only way to get one in RHD spec is to import it from Ireland as IIRC they do either the 1.0 or 1.5 as a manual over there.

The really nice thing about the hybrid is it almost adapts to your mood - On a long boring relaxing motorway run, the engine will settle down to maybe around 2000rpm no matter what speed you're doing and be super chill; When you want to push on it'll get all growly and responsive to the accelerator pedal to slice through traffic or for those twisty uppy-downy B-roads. It's just a wonderful car to drive in all the situations I've had it in, even slow moving traffic!

Was a nice change from my previous Mk2 manual, which would just drone me to death on the motorway in 6th, occasionally forcing me to drop to 5th because it couldn't go up a hill at motorway speeds in 6th

I do miss some of the low-speed clutch tricks you could do in a manual, but I've been experimenting with the N position of the mode selector, and as it hasn't blown up the HSD yet I think I can do similar things with that, but without the clutch wear

If you import one even from Irland you insurance premiums will be more expensive!.

I used AF when I had a US import (LHD Mustang). They were very reasonable.

If you include the GR Yaris they do sell a manual transmission.

Ooh bad me, you're right! How could I forget about that!

Although, to be fair, you effectively can't buy a new one any more; IIRC the next 2 years allotment has already been sold out, and they probably won't increase production as it keeps demand high and stops it inflating their fleet average CO2 figure.
