Any rust issues on a 2007 Auris 1.6 VVTi?

Hi there,

I jointed this forum because I'm looking for some good advice/knowledge. Now that I'm retired I'm looking for a cheap car to do about 4/5K pa. I'm thinking about an Auris Mk1 and found one with under 70K miles and no rust advisories on previous MOTs.

Is this a good idea instead of the usual small city car? Any advice especially about these cars rusting etc?

Many thanks, Dave.

Coming from a very rust prone Mazda, i thoroughly checked the Auris for rust. And found none.

There was superficial rust on intake pipe towards the gas tank, which is easily accessible and can be cleaned and protected.

In my case there was a tiny amount of rust on the front passenger side door. I think the rubber gaskets were somehow clogged and were keeping the water inside the door, causing a tiny amount of rust from the inside, but it was easy to clean and repair.

So check the bottom lip of all doors for any rust signs.

1.6 VVTI is rather economical and offers good  mpg. Not really a problematic engine, there might be a bit of oil on the back side of it, as the chain tensioner is known to seep some oil, problematic O ring, but it's an insignificant amount. As it's chain driven, try to find a model which has had regular oil changes, the more often, the better.

I did buy a 1.0 Yaris to use as a small city car, and found the consumption to be more or less the same as on Auris (unless you drive the Yaris like a complete grandma).

Check the boot for water. Common problem but easy to fix. No rust issues on mine, good luck with the one you’ve seen.

Rust will depend of where and how the car been used. Winter motorway drives are the worst and most cars driven in these conditions does suffer from rust underneath and on upper body parts. Important places to check:

Rear springs and spring mounting points

Rear arches

Exhaust pipes all along

Rear torsion beam

Front struts ( shocks and springs) suspension arms, stabiliser bar.
Front bumper crash bar - this can get nasty , mot failure plus it’s a structural, safety thing .
Front cross member subframe

Both front and rear discs.
These are important places in any used car but auris and most other Toyotas particularly. If the car is clean and rust free then it’s a good buy.

Always good to put the reg in MOT checker too on any potential purchases, gives a good idea on what work has been done or may need to be done on advisories.
