Perhaps - but all I really want is them to accept that it is a problem and get it fixed (eventually!). If the software is from elsewhere they MUST have a contract to get errors fixed ??

And what exactly do you expect from them ?

To quote Toyota Customer Support

Should you remain dissatisfied my only suggestion would be to contact the The Motor Ombudsman. You can find them at www.themotorombudsman.org or on their advice line 0345 241 3008.
They will discuss this issue with you and us, with a view to arriving at a resolution that is legally-binding for both you and ourselves. We will be happy to do all we are asked to, as part of that process.

As I've stated many times - I want Toyota technical to accept that this is a fault (and not a feature). I'd love a fix... but I don't expect one soon.

The problem is, based on this experience, I have NO FAITH in Toyota Customer Services - which means it is VERY unlikely I'll buy another.... Which is sad, because I like the car - its the support infrastructure which gives me no faith...

Maybe it's not unique to Toyota... but that's my only recent experience...

Having worked in Customer Services.... I'm not impressed with the "we've got your money and we don't care" attitude....

Ehh that doesn't really wash - They don't make half the stuff in the car either, but if e.g. the brake system failed they'd be held responsible, not whoever they contracted to make it.

Anyway, that should make it even easier for them to sort out, as it wouldn't be their problem - They just order whoever made the software to fix it or be in breach of contract!

Latest update... The ombudsman have accepted my report;

Speedy resolution is not likely (apparently about 6 months average) - but it'll be interesting to hear what they say...

Thank you for your submission to The Motor Ombudsman.

We’ve now completed our review and we’ve confirmed that this is something we’re able to investigate further.

The below, based on your submission to us, confirms the issues we’ll be investigating and what you’re looking for to resolve your complaint:

Please provide a brief outline of your complaint?

The car has a feature called RSA (Road Sign Assist), which picks up speed limits amongst other things. It displays the detected limit on the dashboard, and beeps and turns the limit red if this speed is exceeded. Sometimes - the car will alert that the limit has been exceeded invalidly, for example, the speed limit is 30 - and it alerts at 25 (actually anything above 19mph). The key here is that the car appears to be treating the limit as KMH and not MPH. It only happens sometimes (more often with temporary speed limit signs in roadworks - but not always). There are settings in the car to set KMH all the time.... which displays speed and distance in KMH - but that is not applicable to the UK. Any speed limit signs should use the units in the settings ONLY.

What would resolve your dispute?

The car software should not use KMH unless this setting is selected in the settings (for example, if I have taken the car to Europe). Similarly, it should only use MPH if this setting is correct.

That's going to be fun.  As stated elsewhere in the forum the limit signs on trucks may be detected and used.

Road signs may be missed and only picked up from later repeaters.

Road signs obscured may be missed.

Road signs may be detected inappropriately, eg a slip road or side road.

Car park limits,  eg 5, 10 and 20 detected but no corresponding correct limit, eg 30, sign posted.

I alerted my MP on some of these given potential legislation to limit car speed to the signed limit.  He 'assured' me that there were no plans as yet and there would be a consultation period.

I don't disagree.... but these "features" are documented in the manual.... and whilst frustrating are, in my opinion "features"....

But "randomly" changing to KMH is a BUG - which is what my complaint is about....

I've had my car long enough now and driven it enough to comment on this.

I've never seen it act like it is in KPH, but multiple times it will pick up the wrong speed limit (side roads, or wrong data from sat nav). I will sometimes see MOTORWAY SPEED LIMIT on dual-carriageway road, but this is less frequent, and I'm not sure when/why it triggers. I'm usually in the RH lane of a specific road when I do see it, so may be something in that.

Cross exhibits the same behaviors and I haven't seen it do anything else, either.

It often shows 60, and rarely shows national speed limit. It shows 70 90% of the time on motorways and dual-carriageway.

My two greatest annoyances are that it shows the wrong limit from a side-street, or uses GPS data which is STILL wrong a year after a speed limit was changed.

Wierdly, several times over the last couple of weeks I have noticed the 40 indicator in the dashboard being red, even though I was only doing high 30s at the time. Never noticed it before, but this is the same bit of road I commute on daily. I assume it has hit the 'thinking it is in kph' issue. Lighting is an interesting suggestion - the time of year definitely throws different lighting on the road I have seen it on.
