What is this piece of stickly plastic on the body just in front of the rear wheels called and why do some manufacturers put them on their cars and some dont.

Mine has been badly peeled off by the previous owner so I'll need to clean it up properly.

Stone chip protector.

For the manufacturers who do use them on some models, testing, etc has shown the need for some protection in the area where they are.

It is a stone chip protective film. I believe you can buy a replacement from Toyota or after market.

It's paint protection film, it's an area that get a lot of dirt also it's a point that gets wear from passengers getting in/out

OEM mud flaps work very well

I took mine off as dirt and grime was visible under the edges when we bought the car and no amount of cleaning removed the dirt.. It's been a couple of months since I removed them and fortunately I have not had any problems so far with stone chips etc.

I check these areas every time we wash the car and if there is any sign of chips I will replace them with new. The car is white so the dirty plastic showed through.

You can get some clear film from eBay for just this purpose if you want to cut to shape and replace

My 1983 MK3 Ford Escort RS had the protective film on top of the rear wing to stop the rear spoiler from wearing the paint away when the tailgate was opened and closed. Nothing new really but very forward thinking in 1983 but just simply for paint protection.

If it doesn't work you can type in 'door sill protection film' in the search
