Power Loss

Hello Gang

I'm new to your forum here. We just purchased an 87 Camry LE Auto. Its really in excellent condition. It has had the ignition switched bypassed, (I'm guessing because the previous owner did not wish to pay for the repair part) this will be fixed soon. My question is when we put the car into drive we have no power. This issue is not an every time thing. It does not appear to be related to the amount of time the car is driven. Does it when its cold and warmed up. All the oils have been changed as well as a complete tune-up. Presently going to check the electrical connections through the shift mech. Any advice or exp. would be welcome.

Thanx and happy driving.
