Bizarre tyre size

175/80R15 could be used instead of 175/65R17 or 175/60R18. Suitable rims include 4.5Jx15 ET35 4/100 54.1 (from the Toyota Aygo) and 5Jx15 ET35 5/100 54.1 (from the Mitsubishi i-MiEV).

Compared to the relatively low profile 175/60R18, the 175/80R15 would give a much softer and more comfortable ride due to the much higher sidewalls.

175/65R17 659.3mm

What are peoples thoughts on changing actual tyre size.

On my Aygo X with 18" wheels/tyres and the fact that they are low profile (sort of).

I have been used to larger side walls on my Ravs and RX 4x4s, but it's so so easy to damage the wheels on my Aygo X, none so far.

When it comes to changing the tyres, I'll be researching possible tyres with higher side walls for better wheel protection.

And if I am successful,  I'll be confirming with my insurance company, that they are fine with it.

Any thoughts ?

Bobby

PS: I am aware of ride handling, tyre possibly rubbing the inner wheel arch blah blah blah when doing this.

If you about to change tyre sizes best to be together with new wheels to match recommended set up parameters otherwise you will have dynamic characteristics change, Speedo change, fuel consumption change, everything. If you way out you may also have premature wheel bearing failure. I don’t see latest Aygo can have easily wheels tyres change., except to have some wheels and tyres from lower trim levels, which is the best and safest way. 👍 Only tyre change is a big no.

All depends, for my country, what is on the conformity paper.

If it doesn't mention this 15" size , it's forbidden.

Not ok with technical inspection. So not ok with insurance.

No need to ask insurance here.

Will get the official documents of mine in some weeks. That will tell me what is allowed or not.

I will be getting the 18 inch wheels and tyres too.
It would already be a step forward to change my wheels for 17 inch ones ...
The tyre choice on 17" would be a lot larger, more premium brands make this size (Continental and Goodyear f.e.)

Just don't know if there is a reasonable chance to trade in 18" for 17" wheels..
And what the start cost would be to change the set of wheels + tyres if I ask Toyota.

Also don't know how big the chance is on other brands to start making these 18 inch tyres and how likely they are to get cheaper.

Not forgetting you need a 4 hole wheel for the aygo x.

Not a 5 hole wheel....

Like this one from the Mitsubishi i-MiEV/Citroen C-Zero/Peugeot iOn

The specification is 5Jx15 ET35 4/100 54.1

Oponeo also list three steel rims with a specification of 5Jx15 ET40 4/100 54.1 from various Suzuki Baleno/Ignis/Swift cars. This is the same specification as the 5Jx17 ET40 4/100 54.1 and 5Jx18 ET40 4/100 54.1 rims from the Aygo X except for the diameter. So the 175/80R15 tyres would be in exactly the same place as the standard 175/65R17 and 175/60R18 tyres.

So is the number "60" in a tyre description, for example my Aygo X tyres are 175/60R18 relates to the sidewall height ?  When I change my current tyres, this is exactly what I want to do. And presumably the other numbers 175/xxR18 stay the same ?

Posted

The 60 is a percentage of the width size...

175x60%... Is the height of the tyre.

175 is the width in mm..

18 is the wheel size in inch...

I guess the 15 inch wheel and tyre could be ok as a spare...

No idea how it would be to drive four of those.

If not on the technical bulletin, it would be forbidden here and I wouldn't buy it then.

So there's no such tyre as 175/80R18 for example ?

mytyres don't list any 175/80R18 tyres. I haven't seen that size listed elsewhere either.

Even if a tyre manufacturer did start making that size, the outside diameter of a 175/80R18 tyre would be far too big for the Aygo X.

Outside diameter of tyres

175/60R18 667.2mm

175/80R18 737.2mm

The outside diameter of 175/80R18 is 10.5% bigger than 175/60R18 which would make the speedometer under-read and the tyre would likely rub on the suspension and/or bodywork.

When considering non-standard tyre sizes, it's best to keep the outside diameter close to standard...usually within about 1.5% difference.

The rubbing against the bodywork is a risk you would have... saw it happen before to somebody. Bit stupid to choose tyres just on price.

imho also counts for buying Chinese tyres from a never heard of in my life brand.

I wouldn't even buy the falkens if I really had a choice.

Some information about Falken tires

Falken Tire is a brand of passenger car, light truck, and medium truck tires owned by the Japanese company Sumitomo Rubber Industries (SRI). It was launched in its native country of Japan in 1983, and was introduced to the North American market two years later and in Europe in 1988.

In June 2015, Sumitomo and Goodyear announced that they would dissolve their worldwide partnership. As part of the deal, Sumitomo bought Goodyear Dunlop Tires North America, which included a manufacturing plant in Tonawanda, near Buffalo, New York. The plant, rebranded as Sumitomo Rubber USA, began to produce Falken Tire-branded tires in January 2016.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falken_Tire

The Falken Sincera SN832 Ecorun came 1st in the 2018 ADAC Summer Tyre Test in size 175/65R14. I doubt Toyota would have selected Falken tyres for their cars if they didn't provide premium performance.

The days I really believed that toyota would make decisions with ME as a customer in mind for sure* and not commercial or economical reasons ... are long gone.

However,  I do believe that the falken tyres will be of an acceptable quality. Not premium. But acceptable.

If I could make my own choices, I will always prefer to replace with Goodyear, Continental or Michelin...

Of course in an other size (15 or 16 inch) and never 17 or 18 inch.

* Just one simple example : heated seats switch only ONE position on ENVY spec level ? Window switch you need to push until the window is completely at the bottom ?

On a 20.000 euro car...

Of course (!!) they made that decision in my intrest as a customer !

I wish these perfect engineers saved less money on this and more on wheel size and wheel cost !

Sumitomo still produce Dunlop branded tyres - and, in the US, supply these for new cars made by Japanese car manufacturers. They also use the Dunlop brand in Japan, South Korea and South Africa. For example the current Rav4 (2019 onwards) for the European market originally had Sumitomo made Dunlop tyres as OE.

To be fair, I think the deliberately held things off the Aygo so it didn't enroach into Yaris territory.

The Mk4 has one-touch operation for all 4 windows :naughty:

But we don't get heated seats or steering wheel at all   (Toyota UK!!!!!)

Just be glad it's not worse - We might not have any of those things but have a pretty head unit and soft touch plastics instead

Excel Yaris has many things but design and icon not , not even push start button which is a big no to me and takes away from the whole hybrid experience. , car without a starter motor doesn’t need ignition right? Icon Yaris even comes with halogen bulbs instead of led front and rear. , this is actually not too bad as led also fail and cost fortune to replace outside warranty.

Seems (saw that on a few test movies) the Aygo X is not just delivered with Falken but also with Michelin.

I do hope to get the Michelin but if not, it will be fine too.

I'm '''lucky'''.   It's Michelin on my new X..

Can you give us the EXACT name and sizes on those tyres ?

Michelin e-Primacy 175/60R18

Anybody who needs a photo, I could send in private message.

Thanks for that.  A quick search shows Asda Tyres are the cheapest at £153 fitted per tyre, may be cheaper if buying 4.

I'd like to see them on the Aygo X wheel, so if you don't mind, a photo would be appreciated.

Asda Tyres ? Is that a brand there ?    Sorry , but doubted about that because I know it's also the name of a supermarket.
They come in that size ?
Must be rebranded ....

Photo will be coming in a few minutes 🙂

I've purchased via Asda Tyres and they are fitted at home by Tyres On The Drive !!
