Bizarre tyre size

Recommended Posts

195/65R15 is about half the price of 175/65R17, and there's a  much bigger choice including all the top brands of all-season tyres.

Compared to the standard 175/65R17, 195/65R15 has an outside diameter about 3.8% smaller as shown in the chart below.

Outside diameter of tyres

175/65R17 659.3mm

195/65R17 634.5mm (-3.8%)

A suitable rim for the 195/65R15 could be a 5.5Jx15 ET40 4/100 54.1 steel rim from the 2015 onwards Mazda 2.

195/65R15 would lower the car's centre of gravity by 12.4mm compared to the 175/65R17 size, and an even bigger 16.35mm compared to the 175/60R18 tyre size. Together with the 20mm wider 195 tyres, this change could make the car's handling noticeably better.

3.8% drop in outside diameter may seem big, but a few people do increase their car's tyre size by up to 5%. A big increase in gearing can have a very negative effect on the car's ability to pull the gearing, but with 3.8% lower gearing, the top gear acceleration could be noticeably improved.

So here's a summary of some of the benefits

Much cheaper tyres

Much better choice of tyres

Better handling

Better braking

Longer tyre life

Improved top gear acceleration

Better looks

Personalised look to the car

Example of cheap (but good) 195/65R15 all-season tyres

That’s a big change imo. I personal wouldn’t go for it. It might make the car better in some areas but also can worsen other characteristics. But if this is what you up to you can do it and share your thoughts. Perhaps other Aygo owners will be very interested.

15 inch is not legal where I live to put on the AYGO X... So why even consider it.

Do you know if there is any brand selling a set of steel wheels with wheel trim covers for an Aygo X Exclusive (18x5J ET40 with Tyre Size:175/60/18" )?

You can try Toyota and request to source a 17” steel wheels. 426110H090 18” steely perhaps not available.

Just an update, I asked for a set of steel wheels 18"  (18x5J ET40 with Tyre Size:175/60/18" ) and it's not available because it's a very unconventional size.

They offer me to replace for a set of steel wheels 17" (RIM 5Jx17 ET40 with Tyre Size 175/65R17 87H), for example with ALCAR STAHLRAD 9616. Is someone aware if Toyota has a set of steel wheels 17" (RIM 5Jx17 ET40 with Tyre Size 175/65R17 87H) with trim covers?

@TonyHSD suggested the part number 426110H090 but I can't find information with this reference.

Based in this picture, I think Toyota has something (not sure if Toyota UK will have):

My one is taken from Toyota BG Bulgarian website as they offer these wheels there. Toyota uk can source the wheels however I don’t know which dealer can help , perhaps there are members here who work at Toyota dealers and they can help you deliver these wheels and best to ask them to put tyres on and doing so it won’t affect your insurance, only need to check with the insurance provider and tell them manufacturer fitted wheels as modification.

Also in The Netherlands and around, the 17 inch wheels are delivered standard (I guess in UK too) on lower spec Aygo X.
So they should exist as spare part.

Yes, but 17 inch alloy wheels, not steel wheels which I’m looking for.

Ok. If you want the alloy wheels 17 inch, No idea where you can get them. I see them on the option list of the Aygo X here , so they must exist and be available.
If it's the steel wheels :   That is sold as a standard wheel on the cheaper versions of Aygo X in mainland Europe.

See photo :  first one, steel wheel with caps,
second one, steel wheel but no caps described,

third one, alloy for 899 Euro / set

Last one : alloy for 1899 per set
All are 17 inch by the way.

Thanks for your answer. I'm only interested in steel wheels with caps and it seems that the only option is go for the 17". I like the ones comes with the cheaper versions of Aygo X in mainland Europe. I will try to speak with some Toyota dealer or trying to averiguate the part number in any Toyota parts catalog (like toyota-europe.epc-data).

If the this options it's not available I will request price for 17" ALCAR STAHLRAD 9616 steel wheel.

Sort of on the same topic, these are a good price should anyone want to upgrade, the price is minus tyres, but I still reckon its a good price.

You might want to compare the weight of the 17" steel rims and 18" alloy rims.

Each 18" alloy rim might be around 2.5kg heavier than the 17" steel rims. If so, that's an extra 10kg of unsprung weight on the car.

It's possible to make alloy rims lightweight, but that would involve using exotic alloys or a lightweight forged alloy construction. However, most alloy rims are made out of cheap and heavy cast aluminium. Because cast aluminium is weak, a lot of material is needed so that it ends up very heavy. Many 19" cast aluminium rims weigh close to 15kg each. A lightweight forged 15" alloy rim can weigh less than 6kg.

Most alloy rims fitted on cars by manufacturers are of the cheap and heavy variety. In sales literature (even this year in 2023), these cheap and heavy rims are often incorrectly described as lightweight.

Yeah, alloys are mostly for looks now; I strongly suspect most standard alloys don't weigh significantly less than a similar steel rim these days.

The difference with forged alloys is astonishing, but they cost near 4-figures each...!

It's one of the things that gets my goat when I see people buy the GR Yaris circuit pack then immediately change the rims to more blingy ones which are objectively worse - The circuit pack adds 18" *forged* alloys, not cast like the normal cast GR rims! They literally throw away most of the benefit of the circuit pack by changing them!

I would have made more sense to get the stock or convenience pack and fit the torsen diffs after market!
