Just to show (via Hybrid Assistant) that mode 4 or S4 (described elsewhere) comes up under certain conditions in the Mk4... Note the speed! You couldn't do that in a Mk3!

I also love Alessandro's sense of humour in the brake section! (2nd panel in top left...)

Happy Halloween everyone! 😁

In case anyone is interested further (and to save you trawling the forum...)

(This for a Mk3. I'm not sure of the speed points of a Mk4. Does anyone else know them?)

S1) Initial start-up on a cold engine (open loop on the O2 sensors and fuel trim)

S2) Engine temp is at normal operating temp, catalytic convertor is NOT up to temp, engine will shut off at a stop after 3 seconds but the car will not go into EV mode (still open loop)

S3) Engine and Catalytic convertor both up to operating temp, the engine has gone thru a 3 second stop shutdown, the car will go into EV mode while running between 35 and 42 MPH and decelerating. (closed loop on the O2 sensors and fuel trim)

S4) Full hybrid mode. Will occur at a stop and after a seven second wait, the engine will shutdown. At this point EV mode can be entered at any speed below 42 MPH while you are not accelerating or going uphill.

The electric motor is limited by rpm and torque, you can hyper mile a hybrid under the right conditions

And gearing! A big part of why the Mk4 can run EV-only at much higher speeds than the Mk3 is not down to the Battery or electric motor, but mainly because they put a reduction gear in so MG1 can keep up with MG2 when it's spinning at higher speeds!

(I don't know why they didn't do this sooner TBH; It's always been known in the previous HSDs that at 30-40mph, poor MG1 has to spin at nearly 10,000rpm to stop the ICE from spinning, but can't spin much faster than that, so the ICE is forced to spin to stop MG1 disintegrating! The new ones still have a limit but it's about 80mph now, which should be enough for anyone! Plus MG2 doesn't have the torque or power to keep the car running at 80mph on its own, even with a strong tail wind  )
