Tech Too Far?

I saw one when I was getting my 15" rims - It's gigantic! I'd be scared to be anywhere near it, looks like it could just drive over my wee Yaris without noticing!

Put a proper back on it with seats and I reckon it would sell very well.

. Or to have knobs for the AC instead of interactive buttons on a computer screen.

I suppose the thread wasn't asking if (like me) you're a bit of an idiot who's so fed up with tech I just want everything electrical to have a mechanical switch that's either off or on.

It's a spatial awareness thing. You can locate a button by feel or counting.  My first computer experience was an analogue with lots of knobs and switches.  They all had different shapes and behaved differently.

I liked the MY19 Corolla which had a selection of buttons and switches apart from the cruise control switches which lack precision.

On the MY Yaris the cruise controls are better but the soft controls require you to look at the screen and press icons and very small controls ; not something you should do when driving.

Bob, I do a American Indian rain dance in my back garden every November 4th, not very coordinated, but enthusiastic.

Maybe it extends to your neck of the woods.

Maybe you should dance to a little arrows and when finished hope that they shoot the things down. 😆

My cat is still very on edge/jumpy today, not liking the last two nights events at all.

Not just that, but map updates, app downloads, web browsing, remote status updates and controls (e.g. MyT stuff), manufacture OTA firmware updates - Anything that needs Internet access basically.

It's another reason why I won't pay any extra money for 'cloud' services, esp. in a car, as even 4G and 5G will be eventually be turned off in some years time when 6G etc. comes out and no manufacturer ever provides retrofits to bring the connectivity up to modern standards.

I'm pretty sure even the SOS system in our cars will stop working when 2G is turned off.

Considering the mixed bag of posts I'm wodering if I should poll this topic to gauge overall response.  Do you think this is a good idea if so would 3 options to the poll work.

What do you think.

Technology aka screens and tons of non useful extras are something very common these days and take away the overall driving experience and pleasure. Authorities has allowed the car companies to go too far and beyond with stupid ideas like matrix headlights, HUD displays, screens for everything including screens on rear vents and door handles - latest bmw i7. The list goes on and on. I hope one day whoever is in charge will realise that no screens or touch sensitive buttons are needed except one or max two displays to replace old school tachometers and that’s all. Real buttons for most important controls. VW officially announced that they are going back to standard buttons instead of touches. Finally.

Trouble is what one person thinks is a really useful improvement the next person will think is a pointless gimmick.

I don't want to get rid of ALL tech, just the tech I don't like 🤣

Oh thank goodness, hopefully that will start the trend of dragging the industry back to the sensible tactile controls we had before that don't require the driver to look away from the road to use them!!

The tactile feel is a must, that one reason i still have physical media and A/V amplifier with knobs still

I did all my training on analogue tv's and top loading vcr's inc betamax so a lot of electromechanical switches

these touch systems with haptic feedback are a no-go for me, especially in that nasty piano black

It's one thing I like about my Mk4 as it still has a stepped 'jog' dial on the headunit, which I can use to move through menus without looking to e.g. pick a folder and song much easier than the touch screen, which is basically impossible to use unless I'm completely stationary.

I wish the volume knob was the same, but it's a stepless smooth dial so I have no idea what volume it changes to; It's only good for quick vague changes, like if a traffic announcement comes on and I need to quickly turn the volume up, and even then it seems to 'skip' and doesn't raise the volume as quickly as it should if I spin it quickly. For anything else, the steering wheel volume buttons are far more useful as one click is one volume level.

I do wish the HVAC had more tactile controls, but the important ones are big pushy buttons and dials and it's in Auto most of the time so it's not too bad. I do miss having big dials to set fanspeed and vents, and I do wish there was a way to make the hot/cold function like it does in a non-climate control car instead of targeting a set temperature.

In fact, and I'm going on a tangent here, it's created a problem I've never had to deal with before, where if I suddenly put more load on the engine like e.g. if I rev up the car for an overtake, the extra engine heat causes the HVAC to overcompensate and it starts blowing cold AC air into the cabin momentarily. In my old non-climate controlled cars I'd just have the heater mix set to 60% heat and leave it there most of the time so a bit of extra heat would come into the cabin momentarily but that was it.

It also means if I set the temp to e.g. 25C, the engine and fan are just on *all the time* and it's annoying. In the old cars with the heating mix at 60% and fan at speed 1, it would just heat the car up as the engine heated up naturally instead of trying to force it.

I don't know if the implementation in the Yaris is just not very good, but my opinion so far is the old manual HVAC controls in my earlier cars were superior to the climate control system in the Mk4...

Do toyota listen to customer concerns regarding issues with technology.

Who knows! They often do weird things that make no sense, that nobody wanted them to do (At least from the general gist of this forum), but on the other hand, the Mk4 has a lot of the things I asked for from a future EV Yaris that I e-mailed them several years ago, which I was not expecting from current trends (Return of the spare wheel, less than 4m long (only just!), cruise control, a digital dash, a HUD!).

Admittedly I didn't get the return of the sunroof, sliding rear seats, or closeable storage bins, and it's not a 300+ motorway mile range EV, but you can't have everything!
