Impressions after driving for a week

General Impressions

  • One week of commuting. 20 miles each way. Approx. a third highway (60-70mph), a third cross country single lane (40-60mph) and a third city (20-30mph) I average 3.5m per KW for Europeans equates to 17.75 kw / 100km. Which I understand is a very good result. Tuning on the AC (22 degrees) reduces the average to 3.4m per KW
  • Space, space, space. I am 7ft tall (2.12m) and I am sitting and driving very comfortable. Getting in an out is a slight squeeze, getting my inside leg under the steering wheel when there isn’t a lot of space to fully open the door. My wife is 6ft and feels like she is sitting in first class on a plane. And that is with my daughter (6 years old) sitting behind her in a booster seat and she is also loving the space. No feet touching the seat in front at all.
  • Visibility. People have asked whether I am bothered that the car has no rear windshield wiper and short answer is no. I’ve had 2 days of driving in the rain and I never bothered me or noticed it negatively. Its worth saying that the car has very good and large side mirrors which is likely a reason I haven’t noticed. Worth noting that the large mirrors add a bit of noise when driving on the motorway. General visibility is also really good.
  • Instrument cluster / want to be “HUD”, as tall person I had zero issues with the steering wheel blocking my wife. Also works without issues for my wife (6ft), but I think arm length also plays into it. Definitely test drive it and see if it suits you. Its worth noting that when using native navigation the “HUD” also displays direction, but not when using 3rd party like ABRP or Google maps via Android Auto or Apple Car.
  • I got the FWD version and even in this version the available power is silly. Whether is accelerating from standstill or overtaking or moving onto the motorway. The car feels like and moves so much quicker than it size / weight and listed horsepower suggests. Its probably worth noting I am a very chilled driver, a “cruiser” –  I cant say it enough this car is an absolute joy to drive, cruising or going fast
  • Software seems to be the weak point compared to competitors. The lack of route charge planning is the obvious one, but does not bother me much. I’ll probably need 1-3 times a year and for those times ill use a 3rd party app. Also needs noting that almost all legacy car manufacturers were or are missing this feature in their software package. But, some obvious functionality seems missing, see below (to note I may simply have NOT found the function). I would expect Toyota to back fill these features in due time. See cold weather management update that was recently released
    • There is no clear digital visualization of the current state of charge. You have the bar in the HUD which is fine, but nothing seems to display the exact value, i.e. 51%. Your phone app will display it, but really?
    • When charging I cant see anywhere in the app or car how fast, how much etc. App tells me current SOC and time to charge to full. But, the app sync can be a bit hit or miss. I would say works correctly 8 out of 10 times.
    • Scheduling works fine, but for I cant seem to set a limit, i.e. charge to 70%.

Some dislikes

  • My single biggest issue - the car beeps on the inside every time the car is in reverse and as long as its in reverse. WTF. Apparently, the dealer can change that, ill need to look into that.
  • Android auto is only available via wired connection. In and by itself not an issue, but you can only connect via the USB port in the wireless charging area in the middle console. The phone is not recognized if you use any of the available USB C connectors. Again not an issue, unless your phone is bigger. I have a OnePlus 5T which comes with a 6” screen and even with a cable with angled connectors I cant get the phone in there and close the lid. A bit annoying.

Any questions, just "shout"

The FWD version delivers 150kW through the front axle. The AWD version delivers only 80kW through the front axle (and another 80kW through the rear axle). So, the AWD will have only fractionally more power but it might have a slightly better balance ... ?

Thanks!
i told my dealer today that I wanted them to turn off the reverse beeping and he said it wasn’t possible. New law since 2021? That all electric cars must make some noise when reversing and going under 20km/h forward. Really hope he is wrong that sound is so annoying.

Hhhm from some of the early material I saw about Car Play it was suggested that the map would still display as Toyota had implemented the Car Play second screen option thing. That’s a shame.

Please let me know if it can be solved. Will take possession of my car end of November.

Dealers wanted my car back to ' collect some data ". I really don't understand what data they are going to get with my 125 miles driving. They came collected and returned.

Not impressed with the milage. When asked about 99% Battery and 269 miles on the HUD  the chief technician said batteries will take time and it might take repeated charging and  up to 1000 miles for seeing realistic miles after charging. Currently I should get around 170 miles max with full charge ( mixed local and A road driving, 21 degrees eco, driving standard as per MyT 85%).

When the batteries are fully charged one pedal driving is not possible.

When your phone is linked with bluetooth and if you use cable android auto I think it stays in android auto for good and does come back to bluetooth connection when android auto is disconnected. Has anyone had this issue.

that does not sound right. I charged my car at work today (level 1 charger) from 46% and was 76% when i left and that point i had 204 miles of range. Your dealer is talking non sense

"edit" at pick up my SOC was 95% and i had 254 miles of range displayed.

Is the 170 mile range what you have calculated you're getting?

When SAAB introduced the hatchback version of the 99 they did not fit a rear wiper as aerodynamics kept the screen clear.  However they relented after customer feedback.  The wiper was needed to clear standing water or light snow.

Mine is also showing more or less the same. Full charge should read closer to 300mi. Toyota said it 280 for FWD. Mine is a FWD. I have heard my friends saying the same about Tesla as well.

What was your real world milage please.

WLTP for the FWD is 320 miles. Using the 80% rule makes for realistic range in non winter conditions of 256 miles, which funny enough was displayed in the car at 95% SOC. Using my mileage average so far of 3.5 miles per KW - 3.5*71.5 kw Battery = max 250.25 mile range. Obviously that means driving the car from 100 to zero, but that is my realistic real world range. If i was driving exclusively motorway it will be less. Similar for proper winter take of another 10-20%

It's 278 miles wltp for fwd with 20 inch wheels, if you have fwd with 18 inch wheels it's more like 312 miles

18 in wheels. Sorry should have mentioned. That obviously feeds into this: "WLTP for the FWD is 320 miles. 3.5 miles per kwh is what i would expect for your car. With 20 inch wheels will be approx 10 percent less efficient 👍

Mine is also 18 inches.  What I am trying to say is that I am getting even 3.5 mi/kw. Toyota technician says it will take few charges before it gets optimised.

Sorry not getting 3.5 mi/kw. Not anywhere near that number.

Quick note, not something unique to the BZ,  but a great feature on EVs. I work morning shifts and it was 3-4 degrees this morning at 5am. I set up a schedule yesterday to defrost and heat up the car 10min before leaving and it worked like a charm. Car was defrosted and cozy warm, seats warm. It was awesome.

Works for the PHEV but just as good is when the car has been left somewhere in the heat all day and a simple tap of the MyT app gets the A/C going.

Reviews keep saying that you can park the car remotely with an app. But I read a note from Toyota that this won't be possible in the UK. What's the truth?
