Toyota corolla 2001. Can anyone tell me why my fuel line, the one up by the engine, came loose? To replace it I had to break the quick release off because it was stuck. Now the new horse’s quick release won’t go all the way in. I am truly baffled.

Moved to the Corolla forum.

Hi Roger,

From your description it sounds as though you may have left part of the old quick release connector inside the fitting, possibley a O ring, when you broke it off. You may need to probe inside the fitting carefully and hook whats left inside out.

Those connectors are anything but quick or even easy release as I found not long ago when my partners C1 fuel pump started spewing petrol out inside the rear of the car. What I thought was a very leaky seal on the fuel hose turned out to be a fracture on the fuel pump right in front of the quick release connector. Had a lot of trouble getting the old fuel pump feed pipe out of the fuel line when it came to replacing the pump and then getting it to engage properly.

Thank you. I'm surprised by such a quick response. If I may, I would like to describe the situation in  a little more detail. As I said, the quick release came loose and I was leaking gas. I was able to find a replacement part. When I tried to take the old one off I could not get the metal quick release off. I had to cut it off with a hacksaw. For the life of me I can’t understand what made it stick. Once off I put the new one on and one end fit very snug but the other did not. I can't push it over the last little ring on the pipe. Now I'm afraid I would be able to get the new one all the way on and I won't be able to get off eather.

I know I can buy gas hoses made for fuel injection. I'm thinking of using those with some good circular clamps. What do you think?

My name is Roger and I live in Atlanta Georgia. I'm no mechanic but I have worked on cars all my life and I have never seen anything like this and I have no one to ask about it. I am truly grateful for your advice.

Hi again Roger,

You may need the advise of someone on the forum more familiar with the 2001 Corolla than I am, although I did own what I think was 1999 1.3 Corolla nearly twenty years ago. Never had cause to touch the fuel lines though.

The fuel lines on the Toyota Aygo/Citroen C1 and Peugeot 107 (all essentially the same) are a very hard plastic with connectors made of simliar material.

I found a youtube video that may show you similar fuel lines and connectors that you have, I believe they're referred to as "Push Lok"

I looked at the same unit in a different Corella and my new quick release is far enough in but its still leaking gas

Hi,

Can you post a photo of your problem coupler/s as this is a UK based site and your US model is a little different in some ways to ours, yours is likely to be the 1.8l engine but do not know if its a carb or injector set up ?

Below is a fuel line pdf of a 2004 US model, though not sure how similar to yours it is ?

Can anyone suggest a way to get this off? It's new (I had to cut the old one off) and now it wont go all the way on and I cant get it off. I must not have checked the pipe close enough and there is some sort of O ring left from the old one?

Yes, that's it! That video shows the answer to the problem! Had I known I would not have had to cut the old one off.  Now I know how to get the new one off then get out what is keeping it from going all the way in. Whoever you are: Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!

If that ytube work around does not release it,  if  you google  "SST 09268–21010 alternative"  there are some devices similar to the very expensive Toyota tool as shown in that .pdf, though have never used either so cannot say if they are good.

I tried to use that type tool but could not get it to go over the first lip but the one in the video does. May be because its soft rubber and can bend over that first lip

Using the tool I got this thing off. But now I wonder why it did not go all the way the first time past the second O ring. Any thoughts?

In your previous pictures you said /showed the pipe did not go in fully, however looking at that video again, it looks very similar to yours when connected, the second ring appears to act  just as a limit stop in case you try to push it too far in ?

In the photo above your metal end looks rather battered around the area where the O rings are expected to make a seal, plus if it really is as rough as the picture looks it might score the O rings and render that part of the coupler useless as well ...?

As a fitting expected to deal with pressure , movement  and heat would think the parts need to be in perfect condition to seal properly.

Going back to your original question as to why the connector split in the first place, it could be just be a failure of that connector or something like excessive engine movement if you had a weak or broken engine mount etc,  though rather hard to say as no idea of the cars history / work done recently etc ?

Hi Roger,

I tried to post a link earlier I found on youtube but seems something went wrong!

Looking at the images you've posted and the video it seems they are similar.

I agree with oldcodgers remarks about the state of the that metal end and that you'll have difficulty in getting the connector to seal, you have high pressure fuel in there and it will find it's way out if the parts aren't in good condition and fitting as designed to achieve the desired seal.
