Leak from rear tailgate

I have a Yaris Cross 2021 model which has a leak in the tailgate door. After heavy rain, as the door is opened water floods out from the area behind the offside rear plastic bit that allows the bulbs to be changed. There is no leak when it is dry or when the rear washer is used. So water is entering the sealed door somewhere. I have checked all the rubber seals and they appear to be intact. It is looking like there must be a fault in one of the seals for water to collect inside the door? My next course of action is to get Toyota to replace all the boot seals and if that does not work the entire rear tailgate door. Anyone else had this issue?

Hi,

if your doors including rear hatch collect water after rain or car wash you may likely to have a drain plugs that hasn’t been removed and your doors collect water inside, not good at all. Usually on some cars doors are designed as gutters and water goes through and out. They have small holes to allow that but these are factory sealed with rubber taps that need to be removed prior to first delivery. Open all your doors and look for these small rubber taps, remove them and you will see water is dripping out. No need to plug them in again, they are only to be there when the cat was built in factory and delivered to customers.

When the tailgate is lifted, with or without the bit of plastic inserted the water leaks from this area and spills to the bumper.

Hi,

you will need to remove the circled with red plugs. Others do not remove.
On the front doors you may have one more on the front that looks like the circled  ones you can take these off too. But no others. After you remove them they should show squared like holes. These are drain holes. Remove the plugs and see if any more water is accumulating into the doors. These plugs are fitted in factory because the doors cavities are filled with wax like material that has anti corrosion properties, and when the car is new Thea thing is liquid like and may be dripping if the car is parked under direct sunlight and at hot temperatures. 👍

You are welcome.
You can keep the plugs in safe place and ask the dealer when in for service. , just to make sure you have the right plugs removed. My car came to me as used and those were already removed, but my gf’s car two years ago bought brand new, some where taken off some were left there and her tailgate was filing up with water too, we removed them and no issue ever since. 👍

That’s a great idea, will definitely ask when going in for the service, it’s really strange that they leave them in!
