Electronic parking brake system error message

I have a 2010 Avensis Estate, a while ago the Electronic Parking brake failed, my garage sourced a second hand unit which works fine, however it’s ‘memory’ hadn’t been cleared down so still thinks it’s in the old car - it works well apart from I still have the error message on the dash. Several garages have tried to clear the error message without success. Has anybody come across this and has any knowledge how to clear it please?

hi, i specialise in dismantling in toyota avensis and have dismanted around 30 t270's in the last 12 months, i believe that if they sold you a unit and a fault is still showing they have sold you a faulty unit, i dont think breaker yards test these units and just sell them without caring too much, i'm not 100% on this, i'm still learning about these troublesome units.

I have the same story and error is about mismatching of serial numbers. Need reprogramming the memory of EPB module.

Is it only Toyota who can do that?

Good question. I would assume the correct version of Techstream might have the facility in the right hands. Also check Toyota independents/specialists may have the diagnostics to do this level of work. I have seen some good auto electricians on YouTube who can do deep level diagnostics and coding. Some main dealers have to use these independent auto electricians.

I have the same issue and my mechanic hasn't got the techstream software for resetting the replacement epb.  Did you find someone to do it or do you still have the problem?

I'm reluctant to buy a replacement epb if no-one knows how to reprogram it. I've been quoted £1700 by my local Toyota dealer, even they seemed embarrassed.

Got to say what a load of expensive hassle just to fix a simple parking brake, Toyota must have made a fortune from this issue alone.

Its just a thought but if the electronics were changed over from one unit to the other then car can work fine presuming it was only a mechanical fault in the first place.

Does anyone know for sure if a new unit would require programming?

According to a technician at a local Toyota specialist the new unit does not require reprogramming so I wonder if you could just refit a new one without any hassle. Or is that just a fantasy.

It's beginning to look like I may have to replace the car which is a shame at only 78k and it's fine in every other respect.

It's sad to see this problem .I know this problem will happen me 2 and I'm half thinking of getting rid of mine down to that problem .my one has low miles and I'm wondering would a remap sort out all those stupid faults and problems would be cheaper just to get all those stupid faults off the cars brain

If you read my thread on the sell or repair dilemma, I would download the pdf from flash22.

It clearly shows that Toyota knew of water ingress problems years ago but has done nothing to help owners resolve the issue.  In fact it must have made a fortune selling replacement units at £900 a pop.

I always thought that at some point the EPB would be a problem and I knew it would be expensive. Like all of us though I was lulled into a false sense of security by a car that was up until this point, totally reliable.

If you want my advice it would be to sell the car whilst there is still some value in it, this EPB issue could happen at any time. When it does it's a complete P I A.

I'm currently looking for a decent estate car without an EPB which is not a simple task.
