Hello Toyota owners. I have Toyota Corolla 1.4D4D - 2004y. It has 66kw-90hp and the engine has timing chain instead of belt.  Today I noticed an unusual work of my engine. On cold engine I was accelerating in first gear. At around 4000rpm came up to a power loss. The engine was stuck at 4000rpm even though the gas pedal was still pressed. I shifted to second gear and continued driving. After that I tried one more time to accelerate in first gear. This time the engine was stuck at around 4000rpm but for a while (1-2 seconds) and then continued rising the rpm. After the engine got warm I tried to accelerate in first gear one more time. This time the engine worked properly. Also in the mornings on the first start the rpm are variabling up and down for like +-100rpm (from 850-950rpm) but when the engine gets warm it works at constant rpm (I think around 700rpm). What can cause this problem? Could it be the turbine? I have to notice that the EGR was clogged a month ago but now it is clean.

There is a semi-common problem with the 1.4D 1ND-TV engine that can cause some of these symptoms.

There is a throttle body connected to the big fat turbo pipe on the left side of the intercooler, and inside it is a narrow channel that goes to the EGR - This gets blocked up with soot over time and a symptom is the idle gets more and more unsteady.

It just needs to be removed and the heck cleaned out of it until that channel is cleared - We dunked it in a metal bowl and sprayed the smeg out of it with carb cleaner and let it soak for a bit, chipping off the bigger chunks with a screwdriver until it was nice and shiny again.

If your search skills are good there is an old thread in here somewhere with pictures and a better description, but that's the short of it.

IIRC it's 3 or 4 bolts, and disconnect the big hose and the flying saucer pipe thing to remove it, then try and clean it. At first you might not even see there is a channel/hole because the soot covers and smooths over it so perfectly, but hopefully as you clear the soot away with the carb cleaner it should appear.

The other thing that can cause it is the MAF sensor is dirty - That's a little square thing held into the intake with one screw and has one electrical plug stuck to it; Very easy to remove, and reveals a plastic tube with 2 metal legs and the sensor bulb at one end - spray the small bulb thing gently with some electrical contact cleaner from a distance (It's delicate so don't just blast it!), let it dry, reinstall it.
