Hi! New member.

I have a 2020 corolla gr sport plus

If I search on Google i can read that my car Has more then 184hp.

But help me to understand! When I read it says that the total power output is 184hp 190nm in the combustion engine and in the electrical engine  107hp and 202nm in my world that shoule be around 280hp total.

If I read on the swedish market where we buy our cars, I can se that several cars have 261hp total.

In some places it says around 150hp and total output 184 but I cant imagine that the electrical or the combustion engine hade 34hp...

I prefer the term "A lot more than is really needed" 🙂

Defo only 184ps (178bhp?) feels every bit of that when you have a full Battery, a little less if hybrid Battery is low.

Adequate power for a loaded car to accelerate to 70mph on a motorway slip road without fuss.

Is 184hp not enough for you? I get the feeling you want more.😀

Something is strange!

Toyota support mailed me and said that the electric engine have 80kw and if you convert it the result is 107hp. And 112kw in the petrol engine = 150hp in my calculator the result is 257hp.

The 2 power output isn't added together like maths, 184bhp are the combined max of the 2 working together at peak. Only for a brief period I think, as the hybrid Battery depletes, bhp reduced.

Correct, Battery is the limit . If anyone has ever try German style autobahn driving probably has noticed how low the Battery goes down and stays low for longer time. 👍

Ha that's funny, I was going over Alexandra Palace the other day because of the massive amount traffic all the road works and LTNs have caused, and my Mk4 suddenly started making a horrendous noise - Turned out the Battery had dropped to 2 bars and cut power to MG2 so the poor ICE had to do all the work and charge the Battery at the same time, but because we were going so slowly it couldn't rev up so I had the worst-case scenario - high load, low rpm, on a 3-pot !

That made quite a racket!

It does seem like the Mk4 doesn't like low speeds on the ICE, as last time I had it at 2 bars I had 4 people and our gear in the car burning up a hill at 60mph and the ICE had a much more pleasant note and shook less!

*Low Traffic Neighbourhoods :wallbash: - Whoever devised these needs to be dunked in the river until they get a better sense of reality and consequences...

The only time you can add the two together and get close to the rated output is on a PHEV where the size of the Battery allows full power from the electric motor. The new Prius PHEV is a good example

It also depends on gearing, if the gearing does not allow the two units to run simultaneously at their peak power, you can't add the two together even if the car is a PHEV.

Indeed 👍

Perhaps Toyota can do all gearing with only a software update but then the longevity of the system might be reduced and Toyota will get negative image for not been as reliable. You see, no one cares that Prius and now all other hybrids aren’t as fast at Vw cars but more and more people are changing the brand as they realise that there is no point of fast and fun cars if they can’t even last through their warranty period. 👌

I think even with the PHEV it won't run both power plants at maximum power, so the headline power figure would still be less than the sum of both maximums.

Peak Horsepower figures are meaningless anyway.

My Mk2 had 100HP but was far slower than my 74HP Mk1.

The thing that tells you how nice a car is to drive in real life is the torque curve - If it ramps up quickly then stays high, then even a 60HP engine will be a lot of fun, but if it starts off low and only slowly climbs and doesn't peak until the maximum RPM then it's only going to be fun on a track.
