Hi Phillip,

I'm not familiar with the Rav4 4x4 D4D but have had lots of problems on other vehicles which those lovely EGR valves. I'm sure that someone on here had problems with similar codes and the EGR system and it turned out that the exhaust manifold was blocked internally. Think there are small passages within the manifold that get blocked and can only be cleaned properly if the manifold is removed first and then cleaned out thoroughly. Not always enough to just clean the actual EGR valve itself. You may find something on youtube on this if you search.

Having said that there seems to be a miriad of causes for the p0488 code bringing the MIL on

Had the diagnostics done, and it's fixed, I would like to share with all, that it was a faulty diesel throttle body gear, just in case someone got same prob,

Hey I was looking at this same forum looking for answers. Almost changed my throttle body but my mech said no first open the inlet manifold. And I did and man oh man was it nasty. Got the manifold the egr and the throttle all shot blasted and fitted it back all errors gone. Pain in the butt was the air pipe from the bottom into the throttle. Still need to put a jubilee clip back on it. Uploaded vids to tktk Kewl tings

The judder from the gearbox is accompanied with this error. And also I forgot to mention the possibility of the gear going is still an option but as both the egr and the throttle have gears inside. My throttle however was rivetted and luckily it seems to be fine. My egr valve electronic gear inside seemed ok.
