Replacement main beam headlamp bulbs.

2012 Avensis T-Spirit T27.

My headlamp beam on dipped beam is not what I would call good. Recommendations of make and model number for a replacement, that will improve the "candle power", would really be greatly appreciated.

Current bulbs are Halogen, as supplied when new, so cannot legally fit LED`s.

Many thanks and Regards, John

You could use something like the Osram NightBreakers, which do give better light.  However they will only last about half the time of a standard halogen bulb.

I had same problem and tried night breakers. They were better but lasted less than 3 months so I bought led bulbs (illegal ofcourse) and low beams became a lot better. Only for the m.o.t must change halogens back (just in case).

So I am an awful criminal and absolutely not tell to anyone to do the same!

Installing the led bulbs was not so simple, but that is another story...

Now getting very confused regarding which bulb is fitted to my 2012 T-Spirit 2.0 Litre Diesel. Certain websites tell me they are Halogen, certain ones say id a T-Spirit they will be HID or LED. My Owners manual supplied with the car does not actually state a reference/model of the bulb.

I thought the bulbs fitted were in fact Halogen, as I stated above, but am now very confused over what is likely fitted to the car.

Can anyone give a definitive on the subject please.

Many thanks and Regards, John

I have always tought that there are only  halogen (h11) or xenon bulbs in 2012 models (according to my owners manual). If yours are really not so good, they must be halogens?

I tend to agree with that assumption, however my owners manual (as supplied with car when new), does not give any actual definitive answer or even a model/specification number for a replacement dipped beam bulb.

I thought the halogen dipped beam bulbs were H11 and the main beam bulbs HB3 - same as the 2007-2012 Auris. Why not take one out to confirm.

Led conversion in halogen bulb designed lights never a good thing simply because one is not designed to work with the other at first place. Even the led bulb replacement is specifically made for that purpose the light density and patterns differ from the halogen bulb properties and all that happens is blind the oncoming cars. The brighter light you get it’s not better disperse and does not give better area of road view  ahead and on the sides. If you drive a car with that sort of conversion longer than 30 min at night you will likely feel headache too. Best to stick with halogen bulbs, just buy better quality ones. , and remember the better performance bulbs has always shorter life.

Being as the car was built using Halogen bulbs it would be illegal to use LED bulbs. I have to find a way of getting better/stronger light than what is given by existing Halogen bulbs.

Anyone any ideas or thoughts about going to HID Bulbs via a converter set. E.G. https://www.autobulbsdirect.co.uk/h11-hid-conversion-kit/?finder_tab=abd_hid

Best Wishes and Regards, John

HID kits are not road legal either.

Your car being the T-Spirit has HID headlamps. They are auto levelling. The manual level control will be only on cars with halogen headlights. There will be a button marked AFS OFF on the lower dashboard, to turn off Adaptive Front-lighting System for the HID lights. The owners manual states bulbs for the HID are D4S discharge bulbs.

Many thanks for this post. I was considering investing in some converters to make the dipped headlights into HID. What a waste of money that would have been.

However, that still leaves me with the problem that the Dipped Beam Headlights are not efficient enough to be, what I would deem as, "safe enough" .

I do wonder if turning off the AFS may prove of any benefit. I have also purchased a kit to restore the headlamp glass, just in case that might do any good.

Best Wishes and Regards, John

If your car really has HID bulbs, they can just be ineffective after so many years?

Polishing the headlamp "glass" is of course a good thing, but I´m afraid that alone won´t help you with your problem...

By the way, have you looked at what kind of bulbs there are?

I have decided to replace the bulbs and am still attempting to identify what model bulb/s I need.

Many thanks and Regards, John

I think this is true for halogen bulbs, but sure if HID bulbs have this issue.

How clean and clear are the inside of the headlights?

Beginning to have second thoughts about replacing the HID bulbs (D4S) as Toyota GB (via eBay website) want £114 per bulb. Yes £228 for the pair.

Best Wishes and Regards, John
