Auris and Prius owners should be aware of the blind spot on these cars

Here guys I was watching a video from my favourite channel to notice something worrying and perhaps many of you who own auris or Prius may be aware of the serious safety issue these cars have . For those who haven’t noticed of yet please watch carefully and make a note. These cars has a huge blind spot created by the A pillars and sometimes that area of blind spot can easily hide a bus or lorry, think about pedestrians or cyclists. Here is the video in question. What surprised me is that almost no one of the viewers comments on that matter but only who is wright and who is not.

The majority of cars designed in the past 20-25 years or so - not only the Auris and Prius - have similar blind spots. All due to the A pillars having to be strengthened to meet safety standards and having to incorporate curtain airbags. Some are worse than others, but it is a general weakness of today's cars.

A Pelican, Puffin or Toucan crossing would be more suitable.

Interesting video Tony.

But I think a rather large pink elephant dressed in a yellow tutu, electric blue tights and big hat, while pirouetting to Mr Blunt's "you're beautiful"was somehow missed in that barrister's room.

He said himself in his explanation of the law and rules regarding crossings that car drivers must or should let pedestrians,or indeed cyclists who shouldn't be on one, while waiting to cross, do so.

Not pedestrians who run onto a crossing without looking, or cyclists who ride onto a crossing at well above walking pace while also not looking for approaching traffic.

But of course, no driver should, or likely would ,plough into anyone on a crossing that they could see on it.

There is a crossing near here, adjacent to a school, and the teens blithely walk across it while surgically attached to thier iPhones with earbuds on , so they are not looking,or listening to the real world, with cars on the road and other dangers.

Luckily for them , I,and most other drivers are aware of the dangers that they , and the adults, put themselves in , and expect pedestrians and cyclists to swing off the footpath onto the crossing with no waiting , looking,or warning that they are going to cross.

It helped me to understand this when I read a poll in an online magazine, that this city is the most likely place in the UK to meet a nutter.

Yes I used to find that with the auris I had that’s why I was glad when Toyota moved the door mirrors on the corolla to the doors and created that quarter light takes a lot of that blind spot out.

having said that you should be looking ahead at all times and try to anticipate what the pedestrian is going to do and slow down!

on the subject about cyclists are not supposed to ride on pavements how come highways have painted cycle lanes on some pavements I know of several where I live and they have created parking areas on pavements by putting a white line on the pavement to separate cars from pedestrians.

Yeah I've been saying that since my Yaris Mk2 and the Mk4 has just carried on the trend - I've found I have to be extra extra careful at roundabouts as the A-Pillars are in the perfect place to totally obscure the oncoming traffic coming round the roundabout; I've almost missed entire trucks coming round because of how they obscure!

@Rhymes with Paris - There's a driving instructor on YouTube called Ashley Neil and he has a great mantra which sums that up: Priority is Given, Not Taken, and it is something that should be drummed into everyone!

So with the zebra crossing example, while a zebra crossing gives pedestrians priority, they are supposed to wait until it is given before crossing and not just cross assuming they have priority. This makes it safer for everyone!

It's the same with everything - Give way lines, roundabouts etc.; Make sure you are being given priority before going and don't just expect the other person to yield, because many drivers are ignorant oblivious idiots who shouldn't have been given a license in the first place. (Especially in London!!)

Of course, the thicker A pillars do not aid all round vision.

But even if perfect all round vision from a car were possible, this could not mitigate against the careless individuals who think that their safety is the responsibility of others.

I have lost count of the cyclists, illegal e scooter riders, and assorted jay walkers who put themselves at risk by stupid behaviour.

I have saved a few of them by being cautious, perhaps they could do a bit too, and think before they place themselves in danger, and then blame others for their self inflicted problems.

It's a problem with modern cars, body rigidity and crumple zones and all that, and yes the Auris is pretty bad at the A pillar
