Ive recently had a problem with my key fob not locking/unlocking the doors. But as I press the brake pedal down it starts to work without any issue. Ive replaced the batterys in both of my keys and I have also replaced the brake switch.

If I drive the car and it gets warmed up. It will work. But when I go back to the car after a while it will stop working. Has anyone had this problem or something similar to this.

Hi there,

It sounds as though your problem is going to be related to an issue with the central locking system recieving the signals issued by both your key fobs.

Seems that the 2000has had issues with the central locking system for others. Found this on Honest John's website that may help.  https://www.honestjohn.co.uk/forum/post/index.htm?t=75202

Also look at this link to similar issues reported previously on here.

Hope they help.

This is an unusual problem, but I wonder if there is an earthing problem? I would check the rear lights to be sure. I used to own a pre facelift MK1 '98 Avensis, and had two issues with my central locking. Both were fixed within hours and documented on this forum.

The first was the fuse marked 'DOME' in the the engine compartment fuse box. It is rated at 7.5A. It can degrade, but not actually blow. It is an Avensis thing. The symptom was the central locking didn't work - either by remote even though the hazards flash and the alarm armed/disarmed, using the key in the lock and the master control in the door.

Secondly the keys can lose sync with the car. This is covered in the owners manual, but those that don't have it, I provided the details in the link below.

Since your car was the facelift T22 with deadlock, there might be some differences compared to the pre facelift cars.

Hope this information is helpful.

Thanks for the reply. Ive had a look at the rear lights and all the grounds that I could find but everything looked fine. Ill have a look again this weekend. Also I replaced the Dome fuse from the spare ones in the fuse box. It could be that the spare fuse could be degraded aswell.

As for the keys loosing sync with car, the thing is that they work without fault when pressing brake pedal.

Poor earth on the rear lights, when you press the brake pedal it makes the circuit to light the bulb, the wireless key receiver is finding it ground path of the least resistance

IIRC the wireless receiver is located in the rear

is it a saloon ?

i was thinking of a t25, the wireless door receiver is on the driver's side near the A pillar up under the dash

i will have to see what ground point it uses

edit. The ground point is behind the driver's kick panel (A pillar)

I have inspected the grounds on both right and left side. There nothing wrong with them. So I am going to take it to an electrician when I get the time and see what they make of it. Thanks to everyone for the replies.
