Correct gearbox oil for the Aygo/Citybugs?

I'm confused, yes likely my age, on which gearbox oil to use for an oil change in my partners C1 gearbox.

Bearing in mind all three vehicle share all the same essentials/mechanicals why do Toyota recommend a 75w-90 and Citroen advise on their own 9730.A8 which seems to be a straight 75W or 75W-80, think all are API GL4.  Or will any of those do equally well. Any advise or thoughts from someone in the know?

Was about to get Comma MVMTF Plus 75W FS manual gear oil which is a fully synthetic.

Is there any difference in the year of the Aygo and C1?

Hi there,

It's a bog standard 2006 C1! Owners maintainance guide states Citroen part no 9730.A8

When you visit various suppliers websites they lisit various oils of varying grades even inputting the vehicle registration mark.

Was tempted to get the Comma 75W FS from Half fords but they also list Comma 75W-90 fully synthetic which is £2 cheaper. Then they have their own brand 75w-80 fully synthetic for a £3 less but their site highlights as maybe not suitable. They're all GL4 rated.

I run a Skoda Citigo and my partner has the C1?

The Citigo gearbox oil was changed early this year by previous owner but no idea when the C1 was last done as no detailed service history and it's on near 46K.

My Aygo. although a 2016 model, has GL-4 SAE 75W as the gearbox oil specification in the owners manual. Third party sites aren't always the most accurate.

From what I gather your 2016 Aygo is basically the same vehicle bespite the outward changes Frosty?

Think I'm going to go with my first choice on the Comma MVMTF Plus 75W FS.

As others have said, GL-4 LV 75W is what it says in my Haynes manual for what its worth and I got my Haynes manual years ago when it first came out for the bugs, so gives you an idea of the timeline.

Thanks for checking on that for me Flash. Knew it was was just under 2L and you helped me to a decision.

I'll be getting the Comma 75w AI GL4 as it meets the same grade.

As an aside I've just decanted the old engine oil into containers to go for recycling out of the C1, that I changed the other day. It was very dark and seemed a fair bit thicker than the new 5w-30 I refilled with so expecting the gearbox oil to even murkier.

Thanks for the reminder Flash.

I know, don't want to empty the gearbox of it's lube and then find the fill plug is siezed in tight! That fill plug will be my first port of call when I tackle it.

dont forget to crack the fill loose before the drain plug

Well guess what!

I had a go at getting to the fill plug and couldn't easily get on to it. So moved down to the drain plug and cracked that off quite easy with a 24mm socket and wrench. Only enough to release it and retightened it again so no leaks!

Spent a good coiuple of hours trying all manner of combinations to get something on to the 18mm fill/level plug.  Nothing would fit due to the limited access there, top and bottom hoses in the way, radiator cooling fan too close, angle of the plug on the front of the gearbox wouldn't allow getting anything I have on the plug either from below. Ahhhhhhh!

So will have to wait now until after Tuesday, the weather looks really crap from then on too. Have ordered a 18mm ratchet spanner with a 15 degree offset. Don't think I've really come across anything else that's 18mm or in such an awkward spot despite being easily visible from above the front of the engine.

Hi again.

So my new ratchet spanner arrived a day early, but too late in the afternoon to do anything but check that it actually fits the fill plug, which it does. Definately 18mm!

Have just been rewatching the tube videos showing the gearbox oil change. All show that the fill and drain plug are 24mm. Now wondering if i'm going to have have problems removing the plug as it appears not to be the right size. Anyone else ever found that the fill plug on the Aygo/C1/107 are 18mm??
