New member with a recently acquired 1996 Estima Emina

Hello, I have acquired an old Estima Emina which has been standing in the open for four years - (I know...) I haven't paid for it but done some tree-work for the owner. Due to its position I have to get it started so that I can move it and get it on a trailer. It is a diesel, auto box and it turns over on the key but no fuel to the injectors. My first thought was a sticking stop solenoid but it turns out that there is no power to the said solenoid. So, I'm wondering if there is an inertia fuel stop switch somewhere, I've heard there is a button on the switch which will need to be reset but the thing is, where is the switch located? Assuming of course that one is fitted to this year Emina, does anyone know?

I should say: I am an ex mechanic but am unfamiliar with this car. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Drop the old fuel out of the tank and check the in tank filter sock on the suction pipe (part of the sender)

replace the fuel filter or at least drain it

worst ways, take the pipe off the filter/pump and feed it with a can of diesel

is it 3CT mechanical injection or 3CTE efi engine ?

Thanks Bob, all that is going to get done but I do need to get to the bottom of this no power to the solenoid. No matter how clear the fuel lines and filters are, the thing won't go if the solenoid won't operate. As to the injection pump, it looks like a mechanical one but I haven't paid it a lot of attention yet. Is the electronic one common rail do you know? If so, this one is definitely mechanical.

its a 3CT i wasn't thinking, mechanical injection uses a shutdown solenoid, Im sure you can bypass it by feeding it 12v

it should still fire on some ether aka easy start

I take you have verified the timing and the cam belt is still there

the big question is, why was it parked ? no compression, dead pump, thrown the timing belt or electrical

Yes, I can make a temporary feed to the solenoid but that still doesn't answer the why, I do need to know if there is an inertia switch fitted and then I can see if it has tripped out.

It was running when parked up, it just became surplus to requirements. It turns over on the key so obviously it has a timing belt fitted.

If it's mechanical injection it's not electronically controlled and no fuel pump in tank as it's a suction system

are you getting voltage to the solenoid ?, what's the resistance of the solenoid ? Are you sure you're looking at the correct part

You do, What you need to do to get it running, get in the dry then work on it

Fuel cut - side of the pump towards the back, should have a right angled boot over it - 223906A511 (3c-te only) or 223906D470 for reference (3c-e mounted vertically on the rear)

Hi Bob, thanks for the reply. Apologies for the delay, busy busy... I have the stop solenoid out to check that it works ok, it does. The problem is no power to it. I'm wondering if there is one of those inertia switches which gets tripped in the event of an accident. A mechanic friend suggested this. Problem is, is there such a switch fitted to that year Estima and if so, where is it? Logically it would be the next thing to check and would explain the loss of power to the stop solenoid.

Diag the circuit, any codes stored ? 1996 should be obd1 23 pin

link the E1 and TE1, turn on the ignition, count the flashes

wiring diagrams are very hit-and-miss

check the AM2 fuse

Thanks for the above, I'll look into that... It won't be for quite a while.

I can take it then that you don't know if or where the accident fuel cut-off switch is then? Sorry, I don't know what Toyota might call it so I have to describe what it does. I might have to jump a temporary live wire to the solenoid to get the thing started after all.
