Hello,

My corolla tsport has a idle issue on start up, revs from 1200 up to 1800 until engine starts getting warm could this be from the secondary air pump that has been on the way out ?

Thanks.

I had this feature on my 2007 avensis 1.8 petrol. I initially thought it was a fault but found out through research that it has a fast idle circuit when cold in order to bring the engine up to temperature quickly. As long as the revs return to normal after about 2 minutes then it's a perfectly normal feature.

Sounds quiet normal as the ECU increases the fuel/rpm to get the engine up to working temperature , then the tickover will drop to the more typical 600 -800 rpm.

Just  like a Choke on older engines.

as Wollop and O/Codger said thats normal for these engine's to run from cold at 12-1800RPM, the variation in RPM  probably depends how cold the atmosphere is. I've recently had Idle Speed Control valve problems after having to take the throttle body out to get the charger out, when I reassembled and cleared the ECU, started on the button but the rpm was all over the place, checked all the vac pipes ect, several hours on the net, led me to the Idle Air Control Valve. its under the throttle body and has 2 coolant hoses going into it. the water temp control's a sprung coned valve, Very delicate it is, and the sensor sends signals to ECU. got a new one of the net, took one look at it and chucked it in me gong wong box. took the old one to bits and carefully cleaned it, the valve was a bit sticky. job done. now it puts the idle up a bit when lights are on or air con on, which it didn't before. considering the amount of work the Battery doe's this time of the year, I would think its how it should be. thought I'd mention this as its a topic on idle issues.

Quiet possible that your fault was due to the ECU being reset  and / or the Battery being disconnected for some time ?

The ECU reverts to its default settings so when you restart the engine  it has to Re-Lean and you typically get all the hunting and near stalling at low revs for the first few miles / minutes until it works out the right settings.

Assume you mean your "new " was a second hand part,  why did you sling it  rather than send it back ?

Could be an interesting point though  about that sensor as we have noticed at tickover that  it does not always increase the revs as much as it used to when switching the air con on.  Eg it would typically go from 650 rpm up to 1200rpm but not so much these days.

Sounds like perfectly normal cold start behaviour. Both the Corolla and Yaris T-sport sits at about 1800-2000. Revs progressively drops down as the coolant warms up. Should sit at about 800-900 once warmed up (80+ deg).
