How safe is it to connect the solar charger to the OBD port talking to Toyota they say it is ?

Plenty of solar chargers on sale supplied with OBD port connectors.  One would assume they are safe.  I also understand that some come fitted with in-line fuses.

It is safe, though it won't be much good on cloudy days.

How long does an OBD II socket on a car last?  It was designed for diagnostics.  This is used less often than connecting the solar panel.

It was designed for cack-handed mechanics to use so you'd hope it's pretty robust! It's big and chunky and has nice big conductors, not like the pathetic hair-thin failure prone ones modern connectors use, so it should be fine...
