We have a 96 RAV4 which is my mothers. It has done 104000 miles and has just gone in for a major service at our local garrage(Toyota main dealers too expensive). We have been told that the syncro on third gear is gone, head gasket is leaking oil and that the sump is too. It has been scrunching for the last 20000miles in third. I can't say i think mutch of toyota build quility-only 800000miles for a gearbox. I drive a Land Rover S111 petrol that has done 174000miles and has never broken down and is on the same gearbox and engine.

just got back from several garages all seem a bit puzzled by it , called at dealer for second opinion ,they say had a handful of same fault with 5'th gear . same as you syncro. problem ........ £150+ lab. ... not a happy bunny .should have kept me 16 yr old landcruiser , done 150k with no problems

I was once told by a mechanic that the most common cause of syncro problems was the driver holding, or resting their hand on, the gear stick while driving. Also, that third and fith gears are the most common to have problems on as they are the most used, third for town driving and fifth for high speed long distance. Don't know how true it is though.

I will say one thing, I have owned four Toyota's now and the only breakdowns I've suffered were because of batteries going dead. In each case, the batteries were almost 10 years old and with mostly short (town driving) trips I'm suprised they didn't go sooner. :D

Hello there I have the same problem with my 96 nreg with 75000 on the clock. Most people are surprised and have never heard anything like this on toyota(that old chesnut)Rav4s even toyota themselfs. Help I hear big bills acoming!! After more research there is a toyota bulletin in spring of 1999 that deals with this fault. Breifly there is a gap between hub three and sleeve three within the gearbox. Toyota have modified the parts. The gearbox has to be removed to repair and as those vechices are well out of warranty there is no financial assistance from toyota. So am looking 850gbp + :crybaby: Merry Christmas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hmmm! Maybe you're all unlicky.

My Dad's daily driver is a 96 p-reg Rav-4 with 98,000 miles on the clock. Most of those miles have been done bouncing along the rutted 2 mile track from my parent's house to civilization; from his office to his rough, muddy yard and/or toying a large, laden trailer.

The run to the yard is particularly bad for the car as it's a "jump in from cold, accelerate, stop and turn off, wait until cold and repeat" type of manoeuver. This is made worse by the fine dust that comes from the crushed stone and seems to enter almost every crevice of the car (until eventually we get sick of it and do a full valet!)

The car occasionally gets longer runs (I borrowed it recently and did 1,000 miles a week for 2 weeks including off-roading) but most of the time it's short journeys.

The car has never needed any mechanical work other than its correct servicing by Toyota and a quick pre-MOT check (new brake pads).

Maybe we're just lucky...

Have fun,

Alan

PS We also have an X-reg NV which has very few miles on it and is about to be traded for a new XT-4 D-4D. We think they're that good...

Just a thought... maybe a gearbox oil change would help, better still ,see if a synthetic oil is available.

Worth a try, its a dam site cheaper than a gearbox rebuild.

Hi There

I was wondering if you managed to resolve the problem as my 97 2.0 gx 5 door has just started doing the same thing. Disengageing 5th gear intermittently. It will hold in 5th if you keep the power on but the gear lever has some play maybe 2 inches and when you lift off the power it flicks back into neutral. Annoying!!

I would feel much better with more info b4 I attempt to ask questions ay my local repairer so that i do not get ripped off too much!

Thanking you in advance for your reply

I cant get my D4D RAV 4 into 5th gear!

I find I can only get 4th around town and under 40mph!

If I had any problems I would be straight to the Toyota garage. Even a quick phone call to see if it is a 'model' fault like the freelander head gasket.

replacing the fifth gear & synchro will cure and it isnt as big a job as 3 rd gear

the repair can be done with the gearbox still in the car where as 3rd gear requires a full box strip down

it will only get worse for the sake of £80 parts & around 2-2.5hrs labour

Normally associated with drivers leaving the hand resting on the gear knob whilst driving

Hi

Just had my P reg RAV 4 gear box fitted with new fifth gear and synchro to fix the fifth gear disengagement problem by my local car mechanic. They were told by Toyota Technical Help that this would do the trick. Well it didn't : still have the same problem. Down £200 so far.

Anbody have any further info or copies of the tech bulletins from Toyota that cover this issue?

Hi,

Had the same problem with fifth gear ... twice!! The first time I had the box replaced (a lot of money!) but two years on it went again and I found the repair at

http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=8866 .

I found the TSB at

http://www.rav4world.com/tsb/TC001-01.pdf

I also got hold of an exploded view of the gearbox with part no.s and UK prices. I suggest you read all of the posts at the RAV4 World form as you do not need all of the parts listed in the TSB.

I've added the image and my experiences at

http://rav4world.com/forums/viewtopic.php?...p;&start=60 (under the nae notgotaclue)

A local garage carried out the repair and it took only a few hours. If you need some one to do it for you and you live in the Derby/Notts area you won't go wrong in going to R A Duncanson in Borrowash (tel 01332 673829) and ask for Neil (ace bloke!)

Hope this helps

Unfortunately the parts needed will cost £310 plus fitting! So unless someone can come up with a better suggestion I think I now have a 4 gear car!

Seems a shame as although its 1996 its in great condition and only done 72000 miles I was planning to keep it till it had done 172000!!!

Oh well, apparently a year later it was a recall item at Toyota's expense, bummer!

If it is in good nick, the cost of that repair doesn't scratch the surface of the depreciation you would suffer on another car so I would grin and bear it IMHO
