Check Engine Light Reset

Hi All. I have a check engine light illuminated on my '97 Camry. I know it is the B1/S1 O2 sensor. Since it is the easiest one to get to, I was going to replace it myself. However, the mechanic said that after I fixed it, there would be no way to clear the code without the scanning device. I have heard that it can be done by simply pulling the Battery connections. Which one is true???

Thanks in advance for your help.

on a celica the ecu can be reset by taking the earth wire from Battery for say 5 minutes, or i think by taking the efi fuses or relay out for the same ammount of time , just a thought maybe not the answer try it .
