Range not calculating properly

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've had my 2013 Verso 1.6 Petrol for around 2.5 years now and whenever I fill up it would show around 390 as my remaining range.

However last night I filled up and noticed that it read 325 which is a lot less. I went to fill again as I thought the pump was too sensitive but only manage to put another couple of quid.

Today, after doing around 30 miles already I decided to fill the car up again at local Tesco, and when I checked the range it's showing 280miles.

Is there something wrong with this and does anyone know how I can correct this. TIA

Hi Zelda,

I think you'll find that this is entirely normal for any relatively modern vehicle with a trip computer.

Your cars computer constantly monitors how much fuel is being used. Cold weather like we're having at the moment has quite a big impact on miles per galoon. The colder it is out there the longer it will take for your engine to warm up in fact it may not warm fully if your journeys are relatively short ones and city driving especially.

A car engine will be at it's most efficient the hotter it gets, if it's not able to warm up fully then the computer will report you have less range than normal. You will likely find that if you make a much longer journey that your indicated range will start to increase as the engine warms up more and the computer constantly recalculates MPG and range.

Bear in mind that range displayed is worked out on averages and are not truely accurate, if you run the car until the range drops to zero you'd almost certainly be able to drive for another 30 to 50 miles as there is always a gallon or more left in the tank in reserve. Not recommended to run that low though!!

Many thanks for that. I'll keep monitoring this, thought something may be wrong. My last 2 big fills, I still had a few bars remaining so it may have calculated based on them to fills.
