Toyota Aygo Hatchback 1.0 VVT-i X-Play 5dr x-shift

Does anyone on here know anything good or bad about the Toyota Aygo Hatchback 1.0 VVT-i X-Play 5dr x-shift? One of my daughters needs to change from her 20 year old Honda Jazz to a newer model car and wants something smaller than the Jazz. Also is the X-Shift gear box reliable and good to use or is manual better/more reliable? Thanks

In all honesty look for a Mk 3 yaris 2012-2020, the aygo with the x-shift is one of the better MMT's, but they are known to have issues when up in miles if you intend to keep it a long time - these gearboxes are not cheap to repair, a clutch will last 30-50k miles a main stealer will quote you the clutch, bearing, clutch actuator and shift actuator just to cover them self to the tune of £1800+ an independent will be £500-750 for a clutch, but some garages refuse to work on these MMT's

The X-Shift, like the MultiMode transmission before it, is a manual gearbox with an automated clutch.

When I changed from an automatic to an Aygo, the head salesman and the senior technician at my local Toyota centre, both advised to steer well clear or the X-shift gearbox.

I have known those two for 20 years and value their advice.

We have similar Peugeot 107 (Mk1) owned 14 years and 108 (Mk2) with toyota 1.0 owned 5 years, both manual and both been very reliable, from following these cars for number of years the newer x-shift (Mk2) seems more reliable than previous  MMT (Mk1). As above these are not like a conventional automatic, but what some call a 'robotised' manual using actuators etc.

If you are using dealer servicing and have Toyota warranty then people have been looked after otherwise as mentioned it needs specialist parts and work, which normal back street garages may not be interested in.

I have an X play mk2 X shift auto. I've been used to it, but as a previous Jazz CVT driver, you'll be better going with the new Aygo cross which has a CVT transmission.

Thanks everyone. She's thinking the Aygo might now be just too small, but if she does go for it the CVT transmission will be the way to go (Thanks Isobel at Wiz201). Now considering the Suzuki Ignis, at least there is a connection between Toyota and Suzuki as they do collaborate with each other. 🙂

Mk3 Yaris uses a very good CVT, the hybrid uses the e-cvt what is decent, Suzuki can be a pain to get parts for, many companies collaborate some good some bad

I'm not sure if the Ignis still uses a torque converter, but if so should be very reliable. If they've gone to an MMT-style single-clutch auto then also avoid...

The most reliable 'autobox' in existence (And I'm not just saying that because I have one now :whistling1:) is the Toyota hybrid system; It's zero maintenance, has no wearing parts and has consistently out-lasted anything else so far.

If she wants something smaller than a Jazz but bigger than an Aygo, the Aygo-X might be perfect, and it can be had with the CVT options. Bit expensive tho'!

Personally I'd recommend a Mk4 Yaris (Or Mazda 2, since it's the same car!) because it's awesome (Not just saying that because I have one :whistling1:) but that's even more than the Aygo-X and has quite a long lead time so might not be practical if it's wanted sooner rather than later.
