Help, gear selector key locking pin

Recommended Posts

Can anyone please help….
I purchased my mum a second hand Toyota aygo for her birthday the first time she drove it away from my house it broke down. A mobile mechanic came and told her she needs to order a key locking pin for the gear selector. I have searched online for this part but nothing comes up. Am I being silly is it called something else?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I just want to get it fixed so she can enjoy her present.
thanks

Hi Kerry,

Can you provide more details on whats wrong with the gear selector?

In the meantime from memory of working on my partners Citroen C1 there are two gear selector cables that run from underneath the gear lever in the car and fit on to the selector mechanism that sits on top of the gearbox very close to the clutch cable. Both of the cables are held on to the selctors using wire spring clips or pins.

Take a look at this youtube video by STUPID BLOKE, he's very funny but knows what he's doing. At 46 seconds into his video you can see the two cables and the pins/clips which hold the cables in place. He's working on the clutch cable but clearly shows the selector cables and how they are fixed, removed and replaced.

You need to be certain that one of these pins is what your mobile mechanic was referring to!

Thank you so much for replying.

so she was driving home and put it into reverse and it got stuck. The mechanic said a pin had sheared so it couldn’t go back into neutral and be driven.

he told her to order a key locking pin for gear selector and that was all. So assumed it would be an easy Google search and the item would come up.

i will show this video to my mum.

One other thought Kerry,

Is your Mum's Aygo a petrol or diesel, is it manual or automatic/MMT.

I've assumed that it's the run of the mill petrol engine with a manual gearbox as they're far more common.

Think it would well worth while giving that mechanic another call and ask him where he diagnosed the problem being located and what he would charge for supplying and fixing the problem. Assuming the car is the petrol with a manual gearbox, then the two selector cables are connected to the bottom of the gear lever assembley inside the car then run to the gear selectors on the gear box as shown in that video. Both ends of the selector cables are held in place with small spring clips.

Being stuck in reverse could be an issue with either end of the selector cables, the gear lever mechanism in the car or with the gearbox itself. This could be a dead simple and cheap fix or an expensive problem to resolve Kerry.

If it's a manual ? There is a reverse lockout mechanism on the gearbox

or is it on the gear selector as in the gear stick ? If so, it's a complete unit

only thing I can think of a "key locking pin" being is a roll pin in/on the mechanism on top of the gearbox
