My info was for mechanical AWD systems.

For hybrids where the extra drive is just electric then it will be a bit different, though I'd still expect some effect. There shouldn't be so much extra friction, but there's still extra inertia which will be more noticeable in stop-start driving.

There are no mechanical AWDs on Yaris’s.

Well technically there is, on the GR4 :naughty: (Although I can understand not counting that since you basically can't buy one without being scalped now! And genetically speaking it's half-Yaris half-Corolla...)

Fun fact: Every Yaris has had an AWD version!! Even the Mk1!!

But like the current Mk4 Yaris Hybrid AWD, they're only available in Japan for some reason! I always thought it'd be fun to have one, but in truth I have no need for it so couldn't really justify e.g. importing one and dealing with all the hassle of having an imported car...

There's obviously usually some weight penalty with having AWD, even the E-Four system, but usually the mpg impact isn't that bad, esp. when the AWD system is earning its keep!

True, but there is drag penalties too plus the extra weight. Anything that is attached to the axles- bigger wheels, bigger brake discs, bigger tyres, drive shafts, differential, cv joints, all that add a bit of drag and always will be a slightly less efficient in comparison to the fwd, but will provide some propelling power. I personally be only interested in gr4 Yaris as an awd option because I can have a lots fun with it. I had previously a car with one of the best ever awd system of all times and was a serious entertainment in the snow, sadly had to go. I did played with the Auris before with the winter tyres  as these are needed to control skidding but once the tc kicked in all fun was destroyed, but at slow speeds in closed car parks hhhmmm so cool.

You do need to know the secret to disabling the driving aids on the GR4 to have 'fun' with it tho'; I was having a good laugh at how ignorant some of the reviewers of it were, complaining it wouldn't slide even tho' they'd turned off the traction control... only they hadn't

That car showed a lot of the anti Toyota bias in the car reviewing world; I never thought people could review high grip levels as a downside, but there it was! I mean, who complains about high grip levels in a car??

13C° here.

At least I had some fun on the snow again, only missed the first night when was snowing a lot and many had troubles. ❄️🏎🏁  For me the most enjoyable driving is on snow and ice in the dark and when its foggy, so quiet and peaceful, and only you hear the tyres how they compressing the snow underneath ❄️🎿

Haven't seen a single snow flake here in south Devon since the Beast from the East in 2018.  But for those of you encountering the white stuff try driving in Eco Mode.  It dulls the throttle response making the wheels less likely to spin in slippery conditions.

I remember a Top Gear review years ago re driving on snow and ice, the overall winner was the Suzuki Jimny four wheel drive 😮

Skinny tyres - just what you want.  My old mini when I was a youth would go anywhere in the snow (as long as I could keep the dizzy dry).

A proper mechanical 4 wheel drive system and good ground clearance.

I must admit I prefer the original Jimny and RAV4s - They've really let themselves go and put on a LOT of weight over the years!

I miss Mitsubishi’s own 4x4’s , there used to be a pioneer in the filed with so many models entered in the car history but nothing new and interesting. Pajero, pajero mini, shogun, shogun pinin, outlander and lancer evo, cars that will be remembered 👌🏎🏁

It’s a pity Suzuki didn’t get the emission problems sorted out for this cracking little 4wd vehicle.
