Switch to electric. That idea is for the birds. So many problems with electric cars. You can’t change a tire if it’s flat, the fire brigade will not cut you out if you have an RTA, leaving you to burn to death. You can’t park them in German underground car parks.the range is next too useless. The prices are outrageous for what they are. I am only selling the diesel because the green rubbish it’s forced to have makes the car unsuitable for short trips.

Passat is my favourite car from all in its class especially in the estate version, would have one even over Mercedes or BMW, Audi however the Diesel engines are no go for me , and always been a full stop , at least for a small cars like that. Diesel engines are great power sources for large vehicles, trucks, lorries, ship’s, trains, large cars like an S-class perhaps. I had never listened to some men especially those involved in politics to tell me what car is best for my needs and use. The diesel gate was done on purpose, the next gate will be the Battery gate and bev as we know them today will get banned before the ice cars get extinct., roughly around year 2030. My point is that no other manufacturer was able to design and develop a clean internal combustion engine set up that uses a bit of fuel and is capable of going miles and miles with minimal maintenance, minimal pollution etc. Only Toyota hybrid are worth any interest currently not only amongst the hybrids but in general. Diesels are no more and for a good reason, they are dirty no matter what is added to be made slightly cleaner.
For the evs though, they are ok for many people and should have been promoted long ago, but not forced switch how is now and not how was with diesels back in 2000’s. Nothing forced comes as good at the end. 👍

do intend to test drive one. However dealers just take you up and down the roads that suit the car for a few minutes.

My local was fine with letting me choose a route - I have a "challenging" one with lots of bends, poor surfaces, etc, which I've used many times over the years.

However, I did get the impression that the young lady sales exec who accompanied me was expecting a typical OAP test drive after noting my age on my licence. She didn't get one!😀

Initial impressions were good. I liked the steering and handling and general "feel" and size of the car. I just left things in normal drive mode which seemed fine though I'm sure there's a lot of interest to be had in finding how to get the best out of the system.

I'm waiting for them to get their MY2023 demo so I can have a longer and more thorough go. They rang the other week and are estimating February.

I have always been a BMW man until 2019. The 6 month old 5 series touring I purchased was the worst car buy I ever made. Yes it looked great, had all the high end tech you would ever need and more. However after a few weeks, I started to see and in the case of the very rock hard seats feel the cost cutting. To add to this the rear hatch would unlock itself and open up when the car was parked up. The self parking would park the car so close to the next car you could not open the doors.

BMW managed to cook the cars command unit trying to download software to fix the door problem. Then they fitted a unit from a different model of car and tried to take me all was ok, nothing wrong with the car.
they had it back in short time, and BMW and I parted company.

the vw cost a 3rd less, and in many ways a much better car. And a great part of me wants to keep it. But after paying out £1500 for an adblue problem and a new EGR valve when the car was just out of warranty, makes e wonder if it’s the right thing having a diesel any longer.

at this time I have sort of shortlisted a Corolla 2lt estate with the 186bhp engine, and the rav 4. But I know that both of these models are having a remake in 2023, so prices of 22 models should drop. So it’s a bit of a waiting game at the moment. One other car in the mix is the Honda CR-V with the 2lt hybrid unit, not the useless 1.5lt motor which is full of faults.

one odd thing is I live in the S/W and cars cost more here then up north a bit.

I doubt 2022 prices will drop, there simply aren’t enough to go around, I’m getting more than I paid for my 22 model when I take delivery of a 23 2.0 TS , used prices are still high as you have to wait many months for a new one

The price of cars will always drop. It’s the nature of things. Toyota are bringing out new models in 23. So who will want the older models. The only car I never lost a penny on was a Land Rover defender. Purchased new for £18,000 sold 5 years later for £18000. Saw one sold a few weeks back for £40,000 with a lot more miles on. I just can’t see run of the mill cars keeping their prices. I know they are high at the moment. But here in the U.K., people are running out of money. And buying cars is not high on their list of things to do. Dealers must turn over stock or go under.

Agreed, new cars sales volume will be half, people haven’t got money anymore for new cars especially private buyers plus the deals are off putting.
The market will become even more interesting. I don’t know what will happen to used car prices , they may plummet too although there is not enough supply, very few can afford now big money for cars. , plus the cars are already stupidly expensive. The old bangers will dominate again like older times amongst few new luxury electrics here and there.

Stupidly expensive they are. In America they are a lot less new. Maybe this is because they have a bigger market or just more competition between dealers I don’t know. Here the rise of PCP nonsense allowed dealers to put on any old price as anyone dumb enough to take out PCP is dumb enough to pay the silly asking prices to start with.

It is everywhere.  Used car price is going up.  2016 Auris at about 60k miles cost €13k in 2019 but now for the same mileage it costs more than €16k although it is now 3 years older.  The main reason is the supply and demands on the new cars.  People also ask a lot of things like wireless charging, expensive infotaintment with giant screen, soft materials, larger rims, etc. that push Appliances cars (Most Toyota) price up.  I remember we only pay $18k after tax for Corolla 2012  base model but now the cheapest Corolla TS is close to $30k.  We do not have 100% inflation over the past 10 years.

There are still some good deals on new cars like vw seat Skoda, but obviously petrol tsi or Diesel., manual or dsg all that really not to my like but when you think it’s 10k cheaper to buy a golf than Corolla many wouldn’t care it’s not a Toyota hybrid.

I'd happily have a Golf if in warranty, I wouldn't want to without!

Well today I went for a test drive I. A Toyota 2lt 186bhp Corolla. It was an OK car, not a car that I could ever love, but it was ok, would do sort of thing. All went well until the salesman stated to play the hard sale. First their value of my car was priced very very low. It’s a vw passat estate on an 18 plate 47000 miles full history. So not a bad car. Then it was the sales manager holding a silly just printed bit of paper which stated that they had just reduced the price. And not only that, but the price was going up tomorrow. At that point, I just got up and walked out.

if this is the way Toyota dealers act, then Toyota is not for me.

The 1.8 has plenty of power for a skilled driver and can average 60mpg over a year,

If you want an idea as to what your car is worth - take a look at We Buy Any car, motorway etc (plenty of companies that will give you what your car is worth).

also remember that dealerships are franchises, and don’t necessarily represent the values of the business they claim to represent (Toyota). In short, there are good dealers and bad dealers.

have a look at Carwow, as you can save £2,000+ on a new Corolla. they will put you in touch with the most local dealer that will honour the deal. It may mean driving an hour or so from home, but worth it for the savings.

Lol, yes walk away from these men. Carwow or similar, online order is much better way to buy a new car.
Good luck 👍

Certainly not my experience of at least 3 dealers used in the past, although as with every brand there will be good and bad dealers. they are franchised dealers remember and not subsidiaries of Toyota.

If you are serious about a Corolla I would suggest trying a different dealer.
