Yaris Cross MPG fallen

I've had my Yaris Cross Design Tech Pack since March and am delighted with it.   Up to the beginning of December I was averaging 63 MPG on 6000 miles (based on the petrol bought not the "Yaris Figures)  but since the weather turned cold I've been getting 53 MPG on the last 500.   I'm guessing it's the cold that's affecting the performance of the Hybrid Battery - any body else have the same problem ??

Yep cold temperatures have a significant detriment on Hybrid mpg. No worries let the car just do it’s own thing.

10mpg loss in cold weather is the norm, sometimes van be even more. My average in the summer was 62, then went down to 52-55 and now since a week ago is 42mpg, lowest ever recorded. All that because of the negative temperatures for so long.

Pfft, 10mpg? My drop's now approaching 30mpg drop! :crybaby:

It's just because of the heating; The traction Battery isn't too bothered - It's not cold enough for it to really be affected (I think that's like -20?), and once the cabin warms up it's happy as it's comfortable at the same temps we're comfortable at.

But the hybrids don't have a way to generate heat other than the engine, so it just runs it, wasting fuel, to warm the car up.

Last year wasn't anywhere near this cold so I'd turn the heater off frequently and was still getting low-70/high-60s mpg, but these past few tanks I've left it on at 20C and it's running virtually all the time which is very wasteful if you're not moving. I'm down to the 50's! :crybaby:

For the first time ever I've seen the traction Battery charged to all 8 bars (!) and the engine was still running!

After being stuck in a traffic jam for 3 hours on Friday, I think I'll go back to my normal faster and more fuel-efficient routes and sod the crack in the windscreen. No idea when that's going to be replaced now and I'm fed up with taking the shorter but horrifically congested route home to protect it!

I've been playing around with the heater and only pushing the auto button when I know I'm climbing a hill and the engine will come on, when it levels out or goes downhill I switch heater off and it runs on Battery same as in summer, still obviously seen a drop but I'm still managing high 60's, I think a lot of the fun in driving these hybrids is to challenge yourself to get the lowest mpg every trip 🤣🤣

I must admit I'm guilty of that... always trying for a 'high score'

(Which is tricky because the Yars has a handicap - It's really tempting to just launch it because the response is so instant :naughty:   )

On a long run in September of mixture of motorway (speed limit 72mph) A roads 62mph city driving 30mph all of which I sometimes exceeded I got 72.57mpg.

In December very short runs mostly town driving and freezing temperatures I was down to 47mpg. Now that is some difference!!!

Yeah that's similar to the sort of drop I've had. It's the same sort of effect I had with my diesels - Short runs in the cold really hurt mpg in efficient cars!

You can chuck logs on the fire or you can inject unleaded into the cylinders.   One way or another, if you’re gonna get warm on a cold day, you’re going to pay for it.   One day in late spring you’ll be back to 70+mpg.

Hmm, I'm not sure if Toyota would countenance a Log-burning Fire option in their cars... Lexus maybe...?

Bearing in mind that recent temperatures in my area reached -10 degrees, I’m not too bothered about reduced mpg.  The reality is, keep warm, keep safe and keep that heater on full power to keep your windows crystal clear to improve all round vision.

A little stack out the middle of the roof would look quite quaint I reckon 😉

Hope I’m not coming over as too self righteous on this subject but Strictly Come Dancing is now being broadcasted and my wife is glued to the telly.  STOP PRESS: Hamza Yasmin is the new 2022 Champion.  Thank goodness this programme has now come to an end.

Unfortunately all cars hate short runs and the cold tempritures.

My worst case for a day is 23.7mpg three stops and a total distance of 2.5 miles.

I think the particle emissions would violate any and all European vehicle regulations, and probably US as well 😆

Don't worry we can fit a Fire Place Particulate Filter to achieve full compliance! Just don't ask how the regeneration process and urea injection part works... (You won't need to stop at services for long journeys...)

Tow a pikey caravan with a log burner and stop every few miles to warm up in it.

I’ve seen diesel cars with so much black smoke coming out of the exhaust pipe that you would think it was burning coal.🤣😂

Agree, was at 67 mph but since the winter kicked in especially this cold period at 56 mph now but mainly short runs and heater on low.

Ford, Jag and LR with the same engine are the worst culprits in my opinion, they black out the road in many cases.

Hybrid Battery is not happy even when its 10C° or below. Keeping heating on and set at leat 20-22C° is very important to condition the Battery to more ambient temperature, similar to having AC on during hot days. Any Battery chemistry likes room temperature. Keeping heating off and heated seats on instead it’s not ideal. Just passed by a Nissan Leaf with likely hvac off and was fully fogged and the driver was driving dangerously slow and seemed like he had almost no visibility at all., also the car was covered in snow. 🫢

That needs 🤣 , 🤪 and 😠

Mind you, if it was an older one putting the heater on would probably drop his range to the end of his road ... and if really lucky, back again.
