i do the same journey most days. there is a point 2.3 miles from my driveway, as verified by my previous 4 cars. in the Corolla the odometer reaches 2.3 miles about 100 yards past that point.

ive not tested it over any other distance. so i dont know if the inaccuracy continues or not.

the car is on the 205/16 tyres and completely standard.

Tolerance allowed is 5-10% a change in air/ground temp can make a vast difference, say 2-4psi drop in tyre pressures

6.4 miles to and from work in the same car for 5 years regardless of time of year, temperature etc.

So no tyre wear? Tyre wear makes about 2% difference in the recorded to actual distance which in 2.3 miles = 80yds.

You only drive about 1000 miles a year to work so difficult to really make a comparison. Perhaps you're previous cars were recording long & the Toyota recording short.

The speedo tolerance is there for a reason, there are many variables.

If you need known distances against which to check ODO or speedo then you can use motorway marker posts.

They are 100m apart. 16 to a mile (actually 0.994 miles but close enough at 60 or 70 mph).

For distance:
Reset trip at first post and drive as far as you wish (making sure to keep count 🙂 ).

For speed:
Set cruise at a steady speed and use a stopwatch with a tachymeter scale.

Speed or distance discrepancy in such a small amount is typical for all vehicles and nothing to worry about. I personally never tried to measure or notice either of those. Sometimes for the speed difference when compared to sat nav for example you are doing 60mph but sat nav shows 55mph, these are also not as accurate as sat navs aren’t always 100% accurate too because of the signal been obstructed or something and travelling speed constantly changes., again best to watch the Speedo only and stay within limits and drive safely rather than watching the sat nav and get up to the very last mile of top speed , many got tickets exactly that way and also sat navs are often a reason for some driver’s speeding.

It is common that the speedometer is overestimated 5-10% but the odomoter is generally spot on in Toyota in the past 10 years.  The 18 or 17" wheel may have ~1% actual distance than 16" just because of  less flex on the rubber.

Congratulations for people who buy low rolling resistance tires,  they have less thread, 30% less tire life, ~3% less actual distance coverage. Even premium brands simply lower the tread depth on "Rolling Eyes Tires", what a dumb concept and marketing.

The latest Michelin primacy 4+ has 6mm instead of 8mm on previous models.

Damn Michelin.  I am glad I still stay with Goodyear 7.5mm EffecientGrip 2 tread depth and 360 UTQG. The all seasons vector4seasons 3 has 500 UTQG rating and last even longer than the summer tires. I think Michelin Crossclimate2 also have good treadlife.
