Keys

Just collected a used 2021 Yaris hybrid. Dealer gave one smart key and one dumb key. Using the dumb key sets off the car alarm -- not ideal when creeping home at 1pm....  Dealer signally failed to tell us this irritation when handing over the car. Duh.

Research indicates that this is because of microchip shortage. Understandable, but the dealer should have told me the dumb key sets off the alarm when inserted into the driver's door and turned.

On the phone afterwards, dealer said "Toyota in their wisdom now provide only one smart key per new car". Then quite 'around £350' for a second smart key. However, I doubt that this one smart key only policy was the case in July 2021 when the car was first delivered. Or was it? Anyone know when the one-smart-key policy started?

If my car did have another smart key, then the previous owner may still have it and be able to come and nab the car, if so minded! Unlikely, but would be good to know he/she does not have a second smart key.

In Japan and US. Toyota promise to send the owners a second smart key when stocks become available. But not in UK apparently.

Pity.

Mine April/May '21, 2 Smart Keys.

Just to check - Do you have a Smart Key or a Flip key?

If your car has a Start button and is a Toyota Approved Used car, it should come with 2 Smart Keys otherwise it's incomplete.

I had to argue this with my dad's Verso as they only gave 1 key and I was like, no, it should come with 2 keys.

Don't let them get away with that as the 'dumb' key can't be used to code new keys - They should have given you 2 keys, end-of.

However, if your car has a normal key-twist ignition barrel and you have a Flip-key remote, this is normal - I must admit I was shocked too, but on the lower-spec cars they only supply one remote flip-key and a 'dumb' manual key!

To stop the alarm going off, you have to LOCK the car using the mechanical lock and NOT the remote; It is the remote locking that arms the alarm system.

If the alarm goes off, starting the car with the normal key or pressing unlock on the remote key will stop it.

Most other manufacturers who sell cars in the UK, require customers to purchase additional keys - so Toyota GB isn't alone in this - and the same is probably true in most European countries.

I purchased an ex demonstrator Aygo in February but it was first registered in July 2021 and it only came with one smart key.  I purchased a second which cost in the region of £150 which included the cost of the key ( with working blade) and the programming.

That's why I want to know what kind of key they're talking about - You call the Aygo key a 'Smart key', as opposed to a more normal  'remote key', but AFAIK no Aygo has keyless entry so it can't be a 'Smart key' (And if it was it would have been a lot more than £150!!), and I have feeling the OP doesn't have a 'Smart key' either, but rather a more normal remote flip-key.

Yes our Aygo came with one remote key and one non remote key. Bought a second remote key from the dealer.

Going back to the early 2000s, Mazdas used to come with one remote and one non remote key - found this when we bought a new 323 and Premacy. Just bought two new remote keys from the dealer - so each car had two remotes and a non remote.

Certainly the X-clusiv had Smart entry and push button start, and it was included within the optional Convenience pack on some of the lower grades.

Wow, didn't know that, thanks for the update!

But yeah it's a good idea to have 2 remotes. It's a sign of the penny-pinching that's been happening in the industry - My Mk1 originally had 3 keys! 2 remotes and a grey valet key.

I'm glad my Mk4 came with 2 keys as I would have kicked up a fuss if they'd tried to only give me one for a top-spec car costing that much!!

Do you have a smart key tho ? Does the car have push button start or a keyed ignition ? Usually the base spec cars like the Icon and design don't have a smart key

Simple answer to using the manual key - open the car then put the key in the ignition if it has one or place the key on or near the start button, then press it

The mk2 got it, the mk1 base spec had door locks and boot lock and no central locking eg. lean over and open the passenger door like its 1984

Without reply from the OP we can only speculate however it is possible he got an early run MK4 Yaris Design which through a specification error in build were only supplied with 1 x flip key and 1 x manual key (no remote) this was fixed reasonably quickly and YGB initiated a goodwill policy for any owner affected to supply an additional flip key free of charge there were limits however, they would only cover the original owner not cars sold second hand nor would they cover any form of dealer car such as demo, courtesy car, rental etc leaving these up to dealers to correct should they choose.

Wow Devon that's fantastic info!

I hope other Mk4 owners see this as we had quite a few disappointed that they only got the one remote flip key!

Is there any official notice of that they could show their dealers?

Nothing official but so long as you are the original owner you could approach your suppling dealer and point out that there is a "self authorised goodwill" for this on Compass, the reason I added supplying dealer is whilst Toyota will supply the ket free of charge as part of the goodwill they expect the dealer to cover the labour for coding the key to the car

Thanks for that info 👍 got a 'dumb' key as the second Key with my MK4 2021 Yaris and tried using it setting the alarm off and thought this is about as much use as a chocolate fire guard!
