"Range" reading malfunction?

I've noticed what seems to be a problem with the "range" (on the speedometer, the other reading seems to be ok) reading. it shows zero even though there is enough fuel in the tank. the fuel level gauge seems to show the correct amount. what could be the cause of the problem? the vehicle is a 2012 Yaris.

Are you fully filling the tank occasionally or are you just keeping a minimal amount in there. If the latter then that could be the issue, it needs an occasional full fill to act a known reference point.

Those things are toys.  They’re a very crude indication of range based on current driving style.

Zero range with still some fuel in the tank, means that you should fill the tank asap.

Not only because the car will, of course, stop moving, but also it may cause damage to the engine components, when the fuel pump starts sucking air and debris.

Just go by the fuel gauge, there are about 5L or so left on empty marker. Use range as indication only.

I don't read the OP that way.  The 'Range' I understood to read a digital estimation whereas 'other reading' I read as the tank gauge.

If the displayed range is zero that suggests the tank content feed and estimated consumption is a digital error whereas the displayed tank content is probably analogue.

Perhaps the op can disconnect the 12v Battery negative terminal for 20 or more minutes then reconnect and see if any changes happens.
Good luck

Thanx for your comments. let me be more clear. the tank was about half full (or half empty, depends if you're optimistic or pessimistic) while it showed zero.

If you are sure of that, then you got a problem, maybe with that floater thingy on the fuel pump.

I had false readings on my Yaris after a fill-up one time. I strongly suspect it was to do with filling up whilst the keys were in and the ignition switched to "on". That was to keep my music playing while filling the tank. Now, I make sure to turn the ignition fully off when filling up. This one corrected itself at the next fill-up.

In that case I would do as @TonyHSD suggests and disconnect the Battery for a few minutes to reset all the electronics. You only need disconnect the negative lead, not both. You will need to retune the radio and set the clock when you reconnect it.

The car may also run a little rough when first starting as the engine management system relearns its optimum points... all of which is normal.
