Bill you have a view on economics I find somewhat challenging. Capex is high yet you wish to minimise your opex with some risk to future certainty in terms of both exposure to failure and capital value, just makes little sense to me.

Me too….

I would expect to have to book a service in advance, especially if I needed a courtesy car. Lack of planning on the OP's part as the odometer is right there in front of you. £240 is not a rip off, though the 'hybrid health check' fee is very cheeky & unnecessary!

The courtesy car charge is normally insurance related, so probably a loophole in the dealers agreement with Toyota.

I also book my services in advance.

However, a curveball has got me. Wife currently in hospital and likely to be so for some time. Daily mileage now almost 100 miles for visiting purposes. Life in rural Highlands.

Car booked for 20,000 mile service - earliest date 16th January. Expected mileage by then will be 21,500 miles.

Life sucks sometimes.

No problem, just hate being ripped off for an oil and filter change especially when the majority of the on road time is spent on EV power. The 10k mile servicing is a different routine to Audi's 18.5k variable servicing on my last steed and that car world actually inform on the dash "service due in XX miles/ days" depending on the type of driving.

It's booked in for end of January anyway. Better get a decent wash and vac...!

Sorry to hear your wife is hospitalised at present, I’m sure the garage/service dept will be OK with the over mileage given the circumstances.

Agree that there are times when life comes and kicks you in the teeth. Currently awaiting results of a pre Christmas biopsy!

I understand your frustration. Prices have risen recently. A main dealer service is valuable for re-sale of the car too - a Toyota dealer won’t offer you as much in part-ex if the car has been serviced elsewhere, as well as possible warranty / future goodwill consequence.I’d be dubious around a non-Toyota garage using the correct grade of oil for a hybrid - as 0w20 isn’t common with other brands.  With regards to servicing over the required mileage, you often have 1,000 miles over the required mileage before warranty will be affected, I’m not sure if this is the rule with Toyota. The oil is 1 year old, and done multiple cold starts, so will have still degraded - more so in time than contamination admittedly

The current Rav4 uses 0W-16:

If you use the wrong oil grade thats a big getout for any MFG if you have a problem further down the road for you or its next owner.

0w16 oil must be like water in the sump….. I recall single grade SAE30 in my Beetle was pretty thin compared with the more commonly used 20W50 multi grades in use 45+ years ago.

I complained about the wash and vac at my first service. Basically because they didn't do it. They said they would. They said they had (they really hadn't even done a bad job). Then again I also asked them to put the recall update on (they did the opposite and wound back at least one major bug fix patch) and asked them to set the key fob to open all doors and windows on a long press (they didn't do that either). They got a written complaint. I never got a reply.

So I sympathize with the ripped off sentiment. Although in my case my company pays for all servicing and maintenance (and insurance) so that part isn't coming out of my pocket. Still, it's when you know you are getting ripped off it goes against your essence!

It's £240 plus another £50 for a "Hybrid Check" and £20 for a loan car.

£310 for an oil and filter change with no availability for almost 4 weeks.

4 weeks!? They did mine while I waited.

For me, no availability for 3 to 4 weeks for a fault where the 12V Battery flattens, which they likely created previously by winding back an update to the telemetry module. If I wanted a courtesy car it was another week or two more.

I don't know if this is a PHEV issue and only having one or two PHEV technicians per dealership or something else. Only Leroy at my dealership, which is a big one in an average sized city, can do PHEV things. This is why I ended up with the problem in the first place.

What about trying a Suzuki dealer if you have one handy?

Their Across is the same car as the Rav4, so they can do the hybrid check and will use Toyota parts.

Might even use a common digital service record.

No guarantee they will use Toyota parts - yes, Suzuki branded parts but whether these are the same as Toyota's is open to question. As regards the hybrid health check, suppose Suzuki have their equivalent but after the new car warranty has expired, their equivalent doesn't extend the hybrid Battery warranty, and, if it did wouldn't apply to a Toyota.

Given it is a RAV4 all bar some badging (some is exactly the same as the RAV) and grille I really find it hard to accept the parts are not direct from Toyota.

Few years back wife had a Daihatsu Terios. Many of the parts had Toyota marked on them. Turned out that Daihatsu and Toyota collaborated on the car. In fact Toyota sold a variant , Toyota Rush, in Australia.

Yeah - even the Across specific parts (headlights, front wings, bonnet) are  largely Toyota sourced from the Wildlander - only the front grill and bumper look specific to the Suzuki. None of those are service parts.

It's really a question of whether you want to spend the Toyota-main-dealer premium to maintain the 10 year warranty, which from my reading of the Ts & Cs doesn't look that great.

Also a question of how long you keep the car. If you keep the car for >8 years, any impact on the residual value is likely to be minimal. If you change after 4 years, then getting the final service done by Toyota to maintain the 10 year warranty for the next owner could have a marked effect on the residuals.
