Adaptive Cruise Control Failure - Be Careful !!!

Wow! That's really odd. They do say that the system may miss a car cutting in in front of you, but, in this case it just lost sight of everything.

Yes, exactly sensors cannot function properly. Something affects them and then car goes blind.

Just do your own tests and be careful! Car is relatively new on the market and these bugs are normal for the first couple years.

Thats right it might be only my car. Just wanted share with you as this is a serious safety problem. I will send an email with all my videos and experiences. They should check car logs and report to Toyota JP.

In really heavy spray I have just once had the system not 'see' a small car - it was fine with lorries. But that is acceptable - it's a driving aid not full autonomy. But your bZ4X should be managing better than it is IMHO ...

And mine is premiere edition which means safety sense 3.0 with pedestrian, cyclist and motorcycle detection day and night! Small cars shouldn't be a problem at all.

Toyota officially named this feature as Dynamic Radar Cruise Control not Adaptive Cruise Control, by the way 😊

I called customer service today, they said dealer will contact me regarding this failure and they also wanted me to share videos for deep investigation.

Lets see...

Yeah that's kinda weird; My Yaris doesn't not behave like that at all - If someone pulled in front of me and slowed down like the car in your video, my Yaris would regen and engine brake *really* hard to try and maintain the gap (One of the reasons I usually hit cancel so the car will just coast down instead of actively regen+engine braking so unnecessarily strongly!)

It does seem like it might be a bug - The way the car icon disappears when the car pulls in front of you is very odd. On mine it does the same thing sometimes, but 'reacquires' the new car within a second. (And then slams on the anchors  )

Remember bZ4X is a new product, who knows what odd software bugs may have escaped detection during product testing stage.

FWIW - I've found & reported software bugs on forklifts in the past, normally get a reply via technical services of confirmed software bug - it will be fixed in an upcoming software update.

Exactly how the RAV4 PHEV works.  The only time it 'fails' is potentially in very poor weather, snow build up on the radar head, it then flashes a warning that the ACC is not available.

This technology is fitted on Toyotas other models. Doubt they will start from scratch designing the software. Should be reasonably mature by now.

Yes, but Safety Sense 3.0? And it already proved that system has bugs and for example recently Toyota recalled bz4x due to lane assist detection problem.

After contacting Toyota GB, my dealer called to book service for next week. I have a quite long list for them to look 😊

*Dynamic Radar Cruise Control issue

*Charging cable is not locking, if you don't hold and push the socket

*Android auto continuesly disconnects from phone while I drive

*12V Battery is always low, I got a message "Battery is low please turn off car"

*Map update function is not working, giving an error

*I can't add secondory driver. (I found a method to add but it is only valid for american bz4x models)

*I can't activate remote lock and unlock function

No, my phone is Samsung Note 20 Ultra 5G. I tested with different cables and cable is not the problem.

And I don't think my phone has any problem too as I used it with many different cars before.

*Dynamic Radar Cruise Control issue / Dealer didn't see any abnormality. I will test it and if I see any problem they will investigate deeper.

*Charging cable is not locking, if you don't hold and push the socket. / They changed my original cable with a new one, I will test next week.

*12V Battery is always low, I got a message "Battery is low please turn off car" / They charged 12V Battery. Now it is fixed.

*Map update function is not working, giving an error / When map is up-to-date, it gives this error message. Strange!

*I can't add secondory driver. (I found a method to add but it is only valid for american bz4x models) / They will create a ticket to learn how to do that.

*I can't activate remote lock and unlock function / Solution: First unlock car using key, then lock the car using your MyT app. Then you will be able to unlock the car using app.

On our BZ4X , we now have 'Adaptive Cruise Control' displayed all the time.

Am sure it didn't say that when we collected the car from new.

Don't use / don't want any sort of cruise control, is there a way of turning it off, or is that a bad thing to do ?

Thanks

Yes, you can do that going settings user manuel page 307.

No, you will do that using small diplay. The dashboard front of the driver. Choose DRCC to deactivate.

I got the Subaru Solterra here in the US this month, which is essentially the same vehicle, and the night I drove it home from the dealership we had very heavy rain.  The ACC did exactly what the original poster described, not detecting the vehicle in front of me and not slowing down to match its speed, repeatedly as long as the rain was falling.  It had better luck with cars that were white or brightly colored, but was useless with black and dark vehicles.  My old 2010 Lexus HS never had that serious of an issue with ACC in the rain, and if it ever did begin to struggle it would shut the system off rather than accelerate towards a car it couldn’t see.

To be fair, the Solterra manual does say the system may not work as expected in heavy rain/mist, but I would at least expect it to shut off rather than pose a greater safety hazard, like my much older car’s system with its first-generation driver assistance system did.

I informed my dealer and luckily that day there was a technician from Toyota. They said tested my car on a sunny day ☺️ and had no problem. I don't know if they wait for someone to die to take the necessary correction. I showed them my videos, as a proof!

I drove Toyota rav4 before and it deactivated the safety system because of the detection problem under heavy rain many times and warn the driver that the safety system is offline! However, cars (bz4x/solterra) go blind! There is a major software problem with DRCC or safety sense 3.0.

Have you complained to your dealer or Subaru?

This is worrying me as one of the reasons I want to buy a new car (this one) is that I drove some time ago hired Vauxhall and its ACC was fantastic (lane keep was not so good, constantly bouncing left to right though). It was bad weather, mist not rain, the car slowed down before I noticed someone driving with no lights through the night. I was kinda disappointed when the ACC switched itself off when heavy rain started. This was almost 10 years ago. I thought the technology improved since then, but after reading this, I'm not so sure.

Done over 800 miles using ACC on my bZ4X Motion FWD. ACC has always worked very smoothly for me even in heavy rain, snow, road spray etc (plenty of all of these over last few months...). Originally, I never thought I would use it, but once I tried it out and combined it with the auto windscreen wipers and the auto adaptive headlights I find it makes long-distance/motorway driving a LOT more relaxing, especially when driving conditions are bad.

That's what I miss a lot in my '12 Prius+. I did a few long journeys in a hired car with the all bells and whistles, and since then, I feel like I'm missing something. What @bZ4X said really surprised me. Hope this is a single instance that can be fixed by dealer.

Must admit I was a bit skeptical about the ACC and lane keeping, but it works well enough that I've taken to using it at any opportunity

It really does help take the tedium and brain fatigue out of the long boring bits of the motorway (Esp. these blasted road works speed limit zones; Weren't they supposed to have stopped installing 'Smart' motorways?? Why does it seem like they keep starting new sections!?)
