Hi,

this is salt from the recent cold weather and grit thrown on the roads.
Highly recommend an engine bay wash thoroughly. You can see corrosion has already started on some metal parts and it will only get worse. You can do partly wash the engine with tap hose , use some Snow Foam, tfr  or other wash agent but not acidic and soft brush. Let the engine running for 5 min and open bonnet, spray all over and start gently with the brush , once you worked all around rinse with the hose set at spray pattern from 30cm distance. Don’t worry about electronics, but make sure air intake is dry, perhaps cover the intake with nylon bag or put in towel and then remove it or check air filter before you start the car. Also wash the car from outside and particularly front end, radiators grill, wheel arches and underneath car body, rear end too.

It is as long as you know what you are doing.
I have washed my hybrids numerous times successfully.
Most important thing is the air intake to be dry and not to keep pressure water very close to tiny cables and wires as the the high pressure can cut them. Anything else it’s ok. Sensors, wire harness, coils, ecu s all water tight. Car engine bays aren’t entirely dry when driving through water paddles or in heavy rain and as we all see the salt found it’s way into the engine. Under car openings, radiator, arches plenty of gaps so water can get in and while driving at high speeds on motorway it is similar to jet washing your engine, perhaps more from the underneath than on top but all been thought of. 👍

After you’ve cleaned the engine bay , I recommend Koch-Chemie Motorplast - it’s very easy to use and the result is just amazing.

I think it might be a release agent from the moulding process or something similar rather than road salt. I see the large hose clip is corroding on the RHS  just like on mine
