Fuel Consumption data on a 2022 Yaris Cross Dynamic multimedia screen,

Another opportunity to test the cross awd this morning on a "skating rink". Yesterday there was a bit of sun which briefly melted the top layer of frozen ice and snow. The net result after another freezing night was creation of an extremely slippery surface. Tested on steep inclines again and no problem whatsoever

Hmm, I don’t know Robert, the closet experts on here were adamant that in practical terms Toyota didn’t have a clue by fitting a woefully inadequate rear motor long before anybody on the forum had one.  They’d read it was only 5HP, not even good enough for a decent food mixer so they must be right…..  I’m wasting no time rubbing their nose in it 😉👍

Conditions the same as yesterday so tested a bit more. Found an even steeper "skating rink" (probably between a 1 in 10 and 1 in 15 elevation). Felt like any steeper and stationary cars might have slipped backwards. The Yaris Y20  was hopeless, no chance of going forward but the cross behaved perfectly with not the slightest indication of slippage or wheel spin. I also tested the cross on a level road to watch the energy flow and, in particular, energisation of the rear electric motor. In normal drive mode there is energy flow to the rear electric motor starting off from stationary but it disengages almost as soon as the car moves and does not re-engage as the car moves along (even at very slow speeds, e.g down to 5mph or less). In "snow mode" it appeared that the rear electric motor was energised ever so slightly longer after driving off but it was difficult to gauge properly watching the instantaneous energy flow screen. It also appeared that in "snow mode" there appeared to be transient energisation of the rear electric motor during driving, perhaps due to slight wheel spin  on slippery patches of the road. I do not know if Toyota have employed any smart algorithmic monitoring and control system in the awd cross and it is very difficult to try to assess the transient behaviour whilst driving.

Anyway I am fully satisfied that the cross will do what I want. It certainly isn't a high powered continuously variable, sophisticated awd vehicle but, at my time of life, that is not what I need.

When you get chance, see if that rear motor works in reverse.

Hi Don Cant see the energy flow screen in reverse because of reversing camera/screen but I took it to the slope I tested on today and the cross moved up the incline effortlessly in reverse so I can only assume that the rear electric motors are energised on drive off in reverse as well as forward. In this situation, however you would be driving up the incline in rear wheel drive which would not be ideal.

You can display it in the dashboard screen in front of you 👍

OK Don, haven't had time to explore all the controls and displays, etc. but I am fairly sure that the rear electric motor must power up starting off in reverse or the cross would not have pulled up the slippery incline.

Any idea how to reset consumption on a new 9" display? I have only find setting to choose when the computer itself reset the consumption. Every refuel, every trip etc. But there is no manual resetting to it. Because on history graph, there is message about the information will be store here when you reset the consumption. thanks

A push stalk on the dash display near the steering wheel like twist switch that used to dim the dash lights.

I think that's the one you need.

I have just realised that I have probably messed up this "topic" by introducing reports of winter driving performance into the original topic which was "Fuel Consumption data ......". Should probably have started a new topic. Perhaps more site experienced personnel can advise me on whether I should start a new topic and perhaps transfer the relevant posts.

I don't have it. The stick in the dash is for switching between odo, trip a, trip b and service interval.

Dash is dimmable through dash digital settings.

Yes Don the rear motor does energise on start off in reverse which I knew really when it pulled away ok in reverse on the slippery incline. Could see it on the dashboard display like you said. By the way I posted earlier to say that I had probably made a mistake by posting the cross winter condition performance under my original post which was about fuel efficiency display. I had hoped that more experienced forum members would have advised me about how to transfer the relevant posts and replies under a new post heading. Can you advise? Also, can you explain why the cross has a very loud and distinctive engine/transmission "growling" noise which is very different to the non-cross Yaris? (even before drive off)

You mean a sort of hollow rattling noise from the engine when you start it cold?  I’m fairly sure it’s the EGR opening to heat up the catalytic converter but when I get chance I’ll hook up my scanner to confirm.  My Mk4 Yaris did it though.  Maybe you mean something else?

Even when the car is up and running "normally" the engine seems to have a distinctive "growl" which has never been apparent in my wife's two last Yaris's.

We’re they Mk4s Bob?  The current Yaris and Cross has a three cylinder engine which has a real growl compared to the old four cylinder ones.

The 3 cylinder M15A-FXE in the Mk4 is noticeably more... agricultural... then even the 3-pot 1KR-FE in the previous Yarisisuesieses...

Apparently it doesn't have any balancer shafts, instead having a counterweight in MG1, which may explain why it's so less refined!

I must admit as someone coming from years of driving Yaris diesels I find it quite soothing, but if you're used to the buttery smooth petrol engines it might be a bit disconcerting!

It's really obnoxious, even for me, if the engine is charging the Battery while the car isn't moving tho'.

That is probably why Don. Her last Yaris was a Y20 model purchased new in Autumn 2020 but I believe it was probably 2019 manufacture (unsure what Mk it is).

I do not mind the throaty growl, reminds me of my 2.6L turbo awd  Subaru. I thought it might have been a gimmick by Toyota to give drivers an impression of power.

FXE is quite noisy, especially when stationary and working as a generator, but during the ride it's as noisy as other 3pot engines, very similar noise to my friend 1.2L 3 cylinder škoda Fabia.  But there is no knocking sound that is common on diesel engines, so no right comparison. I'm already used to it.  For the engine, the priority is to get up to temp as quick as possible, even when you start on top of the hill, the car will run the engine.

Thanks.  I detest Subarus that much I’m ready to sell my Cross just on the grounds that somebody thinks it sounds like one.  It comes under my list of pet hates - big bore exhausts and compounded by the fact any Impreza driver with a big bore exhaust automatically thinks they are blessed with the spirit of Colin McRae.

I too had a dislike of noisy big bore exhaust Subarus coupled with heavy footed young drivers but, Don, they weren't/aren't all like that and after almost 40 years of driving most models of Scoobies I can assure you they are fantastic to drive. I never thought I was blessed by the spirit of Colin McRae I I always thought I was a better driver than him.

He nearly wiped me out once.  I was brake testing at MIRA at the same time they (the whole several truck loads of them) were doing something.  The next thing this confounded big bore exhaust with blue paint flew through the air and landed on the grass behind me.  Sorry Bob, there’s no hope for you (no pun intended - Bob Hope).

So sorry to hear about your unfortunate experience and I can fully understand now why you have such a loathing of Scoobies and Scooby drivers. I think it might be theraputic, and help you rid yourself of some of your demons, if you strike driving a Scooby off of your "f**ck it list" and add it to your "bucket list"
