2004 Toyota Corolla Runx auto 1.5L hesitation on take off and kick down

Hi,

Just drove my sisters 2004 Toyota runx 1500 petrol Automatic and noticed that when cold and taking off there is no power at all , I depress the accelerator about 80% and poor acceleration. It does go but doesn’t do much, very slowly the speed increases and rpm goes up. Gentle acceleration does get the car going and it will change gear but progressively. Once warmed up it gets a bit better.
Also when warmed up and I drive it with about 30% accelerator position while cruising and I suddenly floor it to about 100% ,foot to the floor, it hesitates/jerks/hiccups a bit and almost feels like it’s confused and doesn’t go into kick down gear then after a second or it will get going.

seems really weird and definitely hasn’t done this before. Last thing done to the car was an oil change about 6 months ago. The issue wasn’t obvious to my sister as she is a very careful driver (slow and steady 😁).

Any suggestions as to what could be causing this?
Things I have already done…. Disconnected Battery and reconnect; checked the air box for leaks , I did find that the air box wasn’t closed correctly and thought that was the cause..unfortunately after reseating air filter and correctly closing the air box the issue is still present.

Any help or suggestions will be appreciated

Thnx

Anyone ?

Hi,

I don’t think we have this model here in UK and perhaps why no one has answered. What engine and transmission type is your car and what mileage?

Hi

Thanks for reply. Was hoping with the symptoms maybe someone can point out some things I could check or maybe that they have come across the same issue and how they managed to diagnose the issue.

Engine : 2004 1NZ-FE 1.5L Petrol Auto

101 000kms

Thnx

The 1NZ-FE is used in Yaris, Sienta, etc in USA and Asia. Check their forums.

You should check the basics:

1. Oil level

2. Air filter and any vacuum leak/disconnected hose

3. Spray the Mass air flow sensor MAF with special MAF cleaner or electric cleaner (no oil, no acetone, no chlorine)

4. Sparkplugs

5. Fuel pressure and injectors.

If there is no check engine lights, I suspect either air filter is completely blocked,  MAF super dirty, dead fuel pump from running on empty tank.
