Hi guys,

what do you think about the new MG5 bev? How does compare to Corolla TS , do you think it’s a serious competitor in terms of usability, efficiency, practicality and in general? They are sold almost same price. This is btw the only fully electric estate car available here and pretty much anywhere else around the world. I see the preview version very popular as taxi and private hire cars in London.

I don't know about the MG5 specifically but I haven't heard great things about the reliability of the MG EVs; Keep reading about issues with charging, esp. at rapid chargers, and lots of random electrical and computer glitches e.g. the head unit not working properly or freezing, and electronic door locks and windows failing.

My current impression is their electrics are at the same level as stereotypical french manufacturers, which makes me a bit dubious of their long term reliability.

Apparently the post sale support is decent tho, as they seem more inclined to take in affected vehicles to be fixed, rather than some of the stories we've had on here where users have to fight their dealer to get something fixed....

Very nice car BUT, not for me. Electríc cars are a nightmare in this country as there is no infrastructure in place for long distance motoring. I want to sleep at night so I will stick with my hybrid thanks.

Apart from price I'm not sure they are a direct comparison.

They're not doing too badly these days in the surveys

To me they compare directly because Corolla has no any other equivalent imo. There are tons of estates in that class and non has a alternative fuel or hybrid system that matches Toyota or come close. Also seen these mg5’s as ph cars in London says a lot. Another reason why latest Prius would not be successful at all if offered in uk , because of emissions restrictions etc. Toyota hybrids remain the choice for taxi only for drivers who mostly drive outside big cities.

I think as long as you can live with the range limitations it's the sort of thing that might reach normal people who don't want a fancy, over large, over expensive flashy thing with huge acceleration which simply isn't needed. However I'd wait till someone like Toyota or Honda were making something similar rather than MG which are a bit of an unknown reliability wise

That’s a wise move 👍
I never been an early adopter myself, perhaps for a financial reasons but either way I will probably do the same as you if I need to buy an ev replacement of my current car, or perhaps push my gf get one first so she take the risk 😂, oops it will be a company car anyway so I am not that bad of character 😀

It's good that they're getting on top of the reliability issues in their earlier models, although I'd like to see the breakdown of that survey... like, what's up with Mini? How the heck are they are ahead of Toyota on that reliability survey?!

Everyone I know who owns a Mini routinely has some minor niggley problem that requires a visit to their mechanic to sort out! Has that really changed??

From the reviews I’ve read I recon it won’t be half as good to drive.

I will never put my money on Chinese cars regardless how cheap they are.  They steal tons of our intellectual properties, make it cheaper and kill our industry. They can get away with it just because the Dictatorship single party rules everything.  There are too many stuff they stole from us.  Wind turbine controller and program, telecomunication devices (Cisco protocols, etc.), frame and body design, microprocessors, Battery technology, etc.  They may also intercept all the data through the devices in the car and phones just like what China did in African countries by giving them telecomunication network.

Who knows this MFG brand warranty quality, spare parts, fire hazzards, etc.  If Tesla, VW, or Hyundai cought in fire, their response, remedy, and settlement are often great. But never expect Chinese company cultures match any western companies.

At my local indie body shop is a MG with the front corner damaged. The owner is hoping it’s a right off ‘cos in his words “it’s the worst car I’ve ever owned, don’t buy one”. Looking at it, it may be repairable.

That article highlights another thing I've started to see in newer cars that I hate - Electronic door locks, as in the door locks are electronically controlled without a physical lever to open them!

It's so dumb, like the EPB - Why take something that works perfectly well and make it worse?!

At least Tesla have a physical backup for theirs, but it seems like the MG doesn't, which I'm sure it some sort of safety breach, as that example illustrates...

I still don't understand why some people still buy Chinese cars. They cannot even make Moped and schooter right. Typical Honda or Yamaha motorbike last decades and generations, but not chinese engines and high power electrical devices.

Until today, nothing can beat Sanyo capacitors and critical components on high power devices. BEV is not just Battery and electric motors, but complex high power rate electronics.

At least LG was honest  with the early Hyundai and GM BEV if the car can suddenly combust during charging. For quite some time they cannot charge the car inside their garage.

Simple; People like paying slave-labour prices for stuff.

And you give LG too much credit, they tried their hardest to avoid culpability with that fiasco.

I still remember when LG was Lucky Goldstar and sold cheap electronics through supermarkets etc. - apologies, thread drift 😉

No need to apologize most of us are guilty of drifting on the odd occasion.
