2019 Corolla 2.0 hybrid - any way to monitor battery condition?

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've recently bought a 2019 Corolla Touring Sports 2.0 hybrid.

It's a Toyota Approved Used car with the Relax warranty, so I probably don't need to worry, but for my own peace of mind I'd like to be able to interrogate the car and see the state of the Battery cells.

Years ago I had an Auris hybrid and I used to use the Torque app with Gen 3 Prius PIDs for this. Will this work with the 2.0 hybrid system or is it totally different to the older 1.8?

Cheers.

Yes any suitable phone app and bid 2 reader will do it. I use dr Prius app or hybrid assistant on android and Carista adapter and can see separate cells parameters.

Oooh I am curious. It’s awesome if you can see individual cells. Do you happen to have a screenshot?

Any recommendations for OBD reader and phone app for iPhones?

I bought Carista OBD2 on eBay for £29.99 after a £5 discount that eBay are currently offering. Works well with iPhone and i was also able to turn off the annoying chime you get if you place any heavy object on the passenger seats.

Thanks. Had a quick look at the prices range from £20-£60. To me they look the same.On Amazon they seem to go for £35.

Are they all the same?

Regarding iOS app, what would you recommend? I’m more interested in querying data rather than modding. Would definitely like to see Battery cell health

Edit: I’ve ordered the VeePeak OBD reader as per recommendation from the Dr Prius website.

Will have a go at the Dr Prius app tomorrow when it arrives.

Is there any other good iOS apps for diagnostic information?

I also use a Carista adapter and their own app £47 a year subscription, this for diagnostic and fault codes deleting. For hybrid Battery monitoring I use an android phone and hybrid assistant app or dr Prius £11 one time purchase from Google play store. I have more screenshots but can’t find them right now , here two for example 👍

Thanks for the screenshots. Corolla is not listed in the iOS version of the Dr Prius app so we shall see.

Very nice. Is there a way to change temperature unit to Celsius?

I am waiting until I receive my VeePeak OBD scanner before buying the Dr Prius app on Apple Store. A few screenshots showing the 3 steps to test the Battery, a bit anxious to try it 😅

I wonder if there are any other apps to query other data for engine and gearbox.

Take a note that not all OBD2 scanner are capable to read all hybrid cars.  Only few can use Dr. Prius. https://priusapp.com/obd.html  I am not sure if we can change it to Celcius.  There are some features that may be useful  removing beep on reverse and seatbelt (not recommended).

I found Veepeak is the cheapest and fast enough.  Veepeak BLE+ are faster for reading on the fly of graphs for apps like TorquePro.  It is useful if you want to read the MAF, O2 sensors, calculated loads, etc. at the same time. But even that, the cheapest Veepeak is fast enough.

Carista OBD2 scanner is the same as BLE+ but you do not need Carista software. It is overprice for things that you can do with TorquePro+PID for Prius.

Yup, I’ve gone for VeePeak too.
I don’t think I will mess with settings as worried that will affect the warranty.
I am just keen to view diagnostic data as I am really into data 😂

Hi John, are using Veepeak mini? can you see the tires pressure? is it good enough for DIYers?

Yes you can use Tire Assistance  App. It can read the pressure and serial number of each tires. To register the TPMS to the car, you may need other App like Carista but I think Carista App cannot program Corolla yet.  Besides that, dealership can program 2nd set of tires and you only need one time. It does  not cost too much.  We must use Toyota TPMS, otherwise, it will be buggy later on.

Thanks for the info. I gave Dr Prius a try with my old ELM327 adaptor and, after a bit of messing around getting connected, it seemed to work. Battery module voltages all within a couple of tenths of a volt of one another, so it appears to be healthy.

The PIDs for Torque for the Gen 3 Prius don't appear to be compatible with the Corolla though, at least not with the 2.0 hybrid version.
