DVLA mis-registration

So, my brother recently bought a BMW Gran Tourer but has received a V5C for a Ford Transit van...

Apparently the registration is one letter off his car's - Has this happened to anyone here before??

Is there a better/easier way for him to sort this out aside from calling the DVLA and waiting on hold for 2 hours? He's worried he'll get a bazillion fines in the mean time (He already got one for the written-off car that this one is replacing... is it normally the responsibility of the insurance company taking possession of the written-off car or the former owner to change ownership??)

I'd never heard of something so silly happening before, but it turns out there're a few posts on other forums (pistonheads and overclockers) where this has happened...

Did he buy the BMW from a dealer? If so, would suspect it is the dealer's mistake as I thought they notify DVLA using an online system.

As regards the written off car, I would say it is the previous owners responsibility (ie. your brother) to notify change of ownership otherwise they are still liable for any fines etc, that occur since change of ownership. Depending how badly damaged the write off was, it may have been sold on to a repairer or similar.
