2000 toyota yaris crankshaft position sensor issue

Hi, there I recently bought a Toyota Yaris 1.0l 2000. it has a check engine light so I plugged a computer into it at saw a crankshaft position sensor fault. it ran very poorly, it wouldn't start if I didn't give it a little throttle and the exhaust smells like fuel so it's blending poorly and has no power when driving.  I bought a new sensor, put it in, and cleared the code but it always came back on.  I decided to check if the sparkplugs worked and did a little check on everything I could possibly think of and everything seemed to work as it should. then I started thinking it was some kind of a timing issue. could that be the case and how can I see if the timing is not right????

Hi Sölvi,

Your posted pictures are pointing to a camshaft position sensor failure, not a crankshaft sensor.  Is this a typing error on your part, and you have actually replaced the camshaft one?

The second picture is pointing to an ignition coil failure on cylinder 4, that is the coil nearest the 12v Battery.

Before buying a new coil, It is worth changing the 'problem' coil with the one next to it, and seeing if the fault code changes to reflect that.  The petrol smell likely comes from this fault. But this can also be a break in the wiring loom (next to the coil) falsely flagging this error.

It's best to be careful with the coil connectors - there have been some wiring loom failures (on similar Toyota engines at this age) where the connector attaches to the coil, it is quite a tight bend on some installations. Checking the plugs often involves bending the loom quite severely - only fine when it is new!

If you move the coil to another cylinder, and the ignition fault stays with the same code, then a break in the loom near coil 4 is likely, and that is where I would look next.

Also, don't forget that the coil, if it has failed, will be fouling up the plug is sits on top of!  There might be some benefit to removing and drying that spark plug nose with a blowtorch.

I have a similar age Corolla 1.4 vvti, that is my only experience with all this!  Over time it has had 3 failed coils.

Hope that helps.

Did you get the correct sensor 1999 - mid 2001 are all Japanese built also these early cars run a different sensor type and/or different reluctor setup

the misfire codes are due to the ecu not seeing a correct signal

Pm me your VIN and i can look up the correct part

its not uncommon for a crank sensor to throw a cam sensor fault

There was a Recall on earlier Yaris MK1 for Crankshaft position failure PM your chassis and I can check

yes, it was a typing error, but I wasn't worried about the ignition code because it went away when i cleared the codes.
