Blinding drivers behind you?

For a start they are low level.

They are where your reflectors are.

What's wrong with having additional brake lights?

Half the people don't even pay attention behind you.

The camera brightens the pictures & video as it tries to focus.

Just replaced the reflectors for led reflectors like for like & wired them to the rear lights.

No lower panels need to be removed just 1 screw behind the bumper rear of reflectors then pinch clips & out they come.

Very straightforward

Aye, you’ve got a point.  Some of these German brands are flipping painful and Honda CRV is designed to have your eyes out.

Well it's something I've often complained about in the past, i.e. the sea of brakelights burning out my retinas at night, but since I've joined the dark side with my Mk4's insanely bright LED front beams and brake lights, I suppose I can't really complain any more!

It's like an arms race with lights.

I found it very difficult when they started bringing in the carbide lights after years of the gentle glow of oil brass lanterns.

But now,a sea of glare obscures anything less than than the night sun on a police helicopter hunting the feral larcenous creatures nicking our cars.

Having said that I like Georgey's mod.

Thought that rear reflectors are a legal requirement on vehicles, and are an MOT check. So how do the modified reflectors fit with requirements?

Think people are getting confused they are reflectors with leds underneath the red lenses. Then are sandwich between the red lenses & base.

When they are off they are just normal reflectors.

When tail lights on they are dim 1 set of lights are on but when braking to get then all led light up.

They are 100% legal.

Doesn't bother me as it isn't a conversion I would do.

My point is if manufacturers weren't required to have reflectors at the rear of cars, we'd just have rear lights that can be illuminated - ie. tail lights and stop lights. Converting the reflectors to lights calls into question whether the car will still meet MOT requirements having just rear lights.

Maybe it’s just me but I always thought rear reflectors, reflected light from vehicles approaching from the rear.  I can’t get my head around LED reflectors as it highlights that there is some form of an electrical connection.  As I said, maybe it’s just me!

The idea is they act as reflectors when un-powered, but they also have LEDs which can be illuminated.

There isn't an electrical connector  that goes there so the OP'd have to tap power from the brake lights to power them.

Well you definitely seem to be confused. He clearly said that they are still reflectors, they just have 'backlighting'.

Depending on how the MoT is done he might have to explain to the tester that checking them may need to be done with the lights off.

No - he has also clearly said that they act as additional brake lights, so they are not just backlit reflectors.

So any confusion is yours.

You've misquoted I'm afraid, he said:

They should be fine since they act as reflectors as well; If they were just lights then maybe it'd be a problem, but since they act as both I don't think it'd be an issue.

At what point does the amount of backlighting make them not reflectors?

Whatever they are emitting actively (from the LEDs) if you shine a light at them you will get increased light back at you.

I particularly like the way that illegal registration plate is highly illuminated.

More of this obsession to have the brightest l.e.d. monstrosities available whether road legal or not, front and rear!

Rant over.
