EV reverse

It seems that manufacturers are cutting back on the production of EVs.  Apparently sales have dropped and they are beginning to see that people are not buying them due to the high price's and lack of infrastructure for charging.

Is this the first sign that plan is starting to fail and perhaps they will scrap the ludicrous time frame they have in place for 2030.

In December EVs had their highest UK monthly registrations ever and while car sales in general might be heading for a drop given the wider economic situation, the switch to EVs isn't slowing.

Apparently the december EV sales figures are deceptive and are due to manufacturers manipulating sales figures for compliance reasons, to avoid fines for missing their fleet CO2 targets.

British and European car makers are slowing down production of electric vehicles because they are too expensive for many motorists, according to a government agency promoting electrification of transport.

The Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC), which awards grants to encourage development of zero-emission technology, said in its latest quarterly review of the market that British manufacturers would produce 280,000 fully electric cars and vans in 2025, out of a total production of 1.1 million.

It previously forecast 360,000 battery-only vehicles would be produced out of a total one million.

The new figures would mean only a quarter of UK assembly output will be electric within two years, compared with the earlier forecast of more than a third.

In its report the APC said: “An uncertain economy is expected to drive buyers towards cheaper models and reduced BEV [battery electric vehicle] production is planned on that expectation. Buyers are expected to stick with cheaper options for longer. Although BEV production is reduced, overall production is increased, with more plug-in hybrids and hybrid vehicles [both of which include petrol engines].”

The APC also said it now expected EV production across Europe to be 1 million units lower than expected at 12 million, due to the impacts of the rising cost of living, inflation and the vehicles’ affordability.

Cyker, you are absolutely right about manipulation of figures, production is dropping and there are plenty of reports on this. Will be interesting to see how this pans out over the coming months.👍

Father-in-law was looking at buying a EV but he said that cost was to high and he read  production is dropping. He's looking at a Hybrid now.

Hi Mark,

There's seems to be a lot of news at the moment regards to cost and production of EV's . Obviously it's important for the Government to convince the public that the sales are strong to encourage them to buy. The reality is the cost of living is hitting everyone and the manufacturers are seeing this and will cut back on production.

IMO until both infrastructure and costs come down buying an EV for most of us will not  be financially viable.

What Tesla has just done tells you something. Doesn’t make sense to slash new car price if sales are good. Used Tesla prices will have fallen as well. Lots of Tesla owners will be very upset at the moment I reckon.

Toyota has the best hybrid cars on the road and are being sensible in carrying them forward.

EVs have their place but they are not ready for the general populace yet by a long way. If you do low miles and/or don't drive very far, have a chunk of savings, and can charge at home, then they're excellent cars as they are less likely to develop mechanical problems from being sat for ages and home charging is still loads cheaper than fuel per mile, esp. if you can get on one of these unicorn evening tariffs (If I could get on these insane 7.5p/kW tariffs I'd buy a load of data-centre grade rack batteries off eBay, charge them up at night, and run my house on them during the day! )

At the moment I think the best audience for EVs are people who've just retired - They usually own their own home and can probably home charge the car (Most old people bought their houses when they were like £7000 and are more likely to have a driveway, as such a house would now cost £400,000+!  That's London tho', might be less horrific elsewhere...!), and part of the lump sum from their pension can probably get a half decent EV; The reduced 'fuel' and servicing costs will help eek out the pension payments.
