Toyota Verso D4D 180 D-Cat. Changed EGR valve and now getting P0400 DTC

Had a 2006 Verso 2.2 for years and was very happy no problems at all. Unfortunately it got hit by a truck last summer and we ended up buying another Verso but a 2009 D4D D-Cat version.

It had been sluggish from the start but got alot worse lately. Mechanic diagnosed EGR valve clogged. Changed it for a brand new one as the old one was completely choked with carbon. Previous owner obviously never had it cleaned.

Anyway the day after it was changed, engine management light came on along with VSC and TRC lights. Mechanic suggested giving the car a work out to try and clean out any soot/carbon from the system. Done this last night, cleared the error codes (I have access to Techstream) but the lights come back and the same DTC code is generated P0400 along with C1201 (which I think is red herring as it just means the error has been triggered).

Anyone have any suggetions on what to check next?

2009 is a model change year is this verso the same model as your 2006 or is it the newer 2009 on

Also see HERE AS P0400 is not specifically an EGR issue it is a air flow issue
