Pre-conditioning Question ?

Recommended Posts

My bZ4X used mains power this morning to pre-condition the car in my garage.

Had been plugged in via UK 3 pin charger overnight with a 00:00 - 07:00 charging window to match Eon Drive cheap tariff. Charging limit set at 90% and overnight it had reached 85%.

Watched my in house 'Smart meter' display when I activated 'Start Climate'. Power use jumped from background 300W to 2.6kW; the additional 2.3kW ties up with the maximum 10A supply that the 3 pin charger provides.

Depending on how cold (or hot) it is the car may need to draw additional power from the car Battery to meet the requested temperatures.

Previously when plugged in using the 'My Room Mode', to play with the car systems, I noticed that the 'Power Balance' display initially showed discharge from the car Battery when heating started. After awhile the balance changed to charging as the car warmed up.

I would expect the same to happen after awhile with pre-conditioning (change from discharge to charge). The MyToyota app shows a plug symbol on top of the Battery charge state. If shown plugged in I would expect it to use mains power for most of the pre-conditioning. I don't yet have my Hive charger so don't know how that behaves if a charging schedule is set from the charger rather than the car. Depends whether the plug symbol shows mains power available.

I just checked mine, and it did draw power from the mains while pre-heat started. I (thanks, but no thanks to BG) have only a granny charger. It could be that the pre-heat requires more than 2.3kW, so it takes the remainder from the traction Battery?
