Hi all

last couple of days I have heard a loud moaning noise as I manoeuvred the car out of the garage (not the wife). Didn’t last long, couldn’t hear it at normal driving speed. Anyone experienced similar?

That's to alert pedestrians. Artificial sound generated from a speaker under the bonnet I think. It's sometimes referred to as a choir of angels but more like a moaning sound like my wife makes about just about anything and everything I do.

It’s a cross between Dr Who’s TARDIS and something from Star Wars.

There is a bulletin (TSB) from Toyota that may apply;

BE-00612T-TME

Subject:

"Train horn noise" from A/C compressor when the vehicle is started.

Area of Application:
All Markets

Models – Model Codes:
RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid - AXAP54

Description of the phenomenon

Some customers may experience and report the abnormal noise, "train horn noise", immediately after the start of vehicle and air conditioner(A/C) system under cold ambient temperature (Approx. 5°C or less). This noise is caused by pulsation noise due to compression of liquid refrigerant in A/C compressor, and easier to occur at low temperatures. Tens of seconds after the occurrence, this noise will be disappeared.

Production change

The following has been changed:

  • The logic of A/C ECU (AMPLIFIER ASSY , AIR CONDITIONER) was modified to improve condition of liquid compression in A/C compressor.

I had this applied when I had the first service done in May ‘21, it still makes a noise when the temperature is low, it can be very bad.
